Modded Mut Vs Signal
on: November 16, 2015, 01:05:55 PM
I bought the Signal because I have a specific use for it. I like it. But its a little over priced.
To be honest I think they could have achieved a similar result with the Mut chassis and simply changing the attachments. My Mut has proved chalenging to Mod. I would love to see scissors and a large flat head. Both surprisingly useful in a survival situation.

A pic of the awl amongst these. And some of the survival gear I take with me. Atleast this means I don't have to take a flint and sharpener. Despite how much I like the Gatco 2.0

The awl pic comparison above is with my BO Surge. I may ditch the belt clip. Comes with standard sheath.

Good comparison.

Could you lay the signal on top of the MUT and take a picture from above?

Excellent comparison man :salute:  Now since we had one special photo request, I have one as well.  Could you please take a side by side pic of them to show the thickness, as in both sitting on a flat surface next to each other?  In the above pic, it doesn't look like the MUT is all that much bigger than the Signal, which is why I want the thickness pic.  The MUT is supposedly rather heavy, so I'm curious.  Thanks!

G'Date Mate,

I like that very much.

The MUT is one of my favourites too. I'm waiting for a file to arrive to attempt to add that to the MUT. Not sure if the saw is going to make room for the file or add it where you have the prey bar. Does the plastic bits above the two bit adapters simply unscrew?

Cheers,

Pete

Monrogue I am out of town so will have to get back to you with more pics in a few days. The Mut is heavier and bulkier, but the size difference is largely due to the C4 spike and Carbon scraper. Pocket clip also, but that is easily removable. The extra length is not that bad considering you get a strap cutter.

Pieter lets just say I have voided the warranty on the Mut. Those screw did not want to come out even after warming with a blow torch. Had to unscrew them with my Crunch. And the plastic I had to tear out (with my Wave I think) damaging it it the process.

I took all of the plastic pieces off of my MUT so that I could dye them black, then reattached without a problem. Didnt warm them or anything, just unscrewed them. There was a thread about dying the plastic and others removed the pieces without issue too. Stinks that TheDude had trouble but remiving the plastic wasn't too much of a production for me.

How did you go drilling it out? Looks like a better fit than mine too. Wish I could get my hands on one. How is the thickness? I wonder if I could get both in.

Yes, scissors would be great. I would welcome a city version of the Signal. Scissors instead of a saw, a measuring tape instead of the whistle, package opener instead of the can opener.

After that if possible a toothpick somewhere, a breath mint dispenser, extendable back scratcher that doubles up as magnet picker, removable pen/pencil, laser leveler, roll out solar panels to re-charge your electronic devices and a pull out space blanket for emergencies and impromptu picnics.

On a serious note, more MTs need to include a package opener. One of the Dime's saving graces.

While at it, could I add a TV, a fridge and a microwave on that?  :climber: :climber:

Make good sense, I think in spirit, MT is used to address 90% of our daily need, and I would rather to have a package opener than a serrated blade for seat beat cutting.

I'll take pictures when I try to do this mod with a Charge file. That is if the pivot hole is the same size or smaller. To big and I am stuffed...

Thanks! I used my drill press and cutting fluid to drill it out. It was a pretty slow process, and it was hard to keep the file from getting too hot.

I had to use a washer under it to bring it up high enough that the screw would be able to tighten it up. I don't think you'd be able to get two tools in that spot though.

Tooltime - I see in your signature that you have a MUT too. Think the wingman scissors would fit in the MUT of you were to remove the plastic piece like others are doing? Are the pivots / tang shapes the same as in the Signal?

Monrogue,  thanks

Tommywp,  it is just like putting the wingman sissors on the wave.  The hole in the spring piece is large enough but the hole in the sissors part needs to be opened up a bit,  I used a tungsten carbide bit in my dermel for this(go slow). You also need to adjust the stop on the back of the sissors so that it will lock in place.

As for the mut,  not sure what to do yet. Put a 3/32 punch on instead of the 1/8 so it fits my handguns. Saw a post about using the sissors from a card tool and putting it in the slot where one of the long bits go. I did fit an extra diamond file from a surge so it fit in the bit exchanger.

Pietervn,  here are the pictures of the mut and file.  All i did was grind the end down enough to fit in the bit holder.  It wobbles some side to side,  but probably would be used off the tool anyway.
