Wenger Giant - becoming scarce
on: December 05, 2015, 08:40:56 PM
I decided to see if there were still any Wenger bargains to be had out there. I don't know if anyone else has noticed but they now seem to be getting pretty scarce.
First I looked for the Snow, not a lot. Then the Titanium trio...again they are there if you look hard enough. But biggest surprise for me was the realisation that the Giant is now fast becoming scarce. I've been monitoring the prices on Amazon.uk, yet I checked a few days ago...nothing so then checked Amazon.com...nothing. So finally did a search which said HH had them in stock (£799) but I'm beginning to wonder if that's correct. Twice in the past I've purchased from HH only to be told no stock available.

So, if anyone here wants a slice a history that will never repeat itself, now might be the time to bite the bullet. Because you can be sure when they've finally gone - those left holding them will want and expect Top Dollar!!

Yep virtually all the Wenger Snows are gone, as far as I can tell. Ditto the bright orange Realtrees (but I can't say I ever wanted to be dazzled by a penknife.)
I did find some Snow 10s around but the bigger ones have all gone the way of the dodo. If you know of some Ranger type Snows spill the beans mate... I'd like to get another one. I love the snowy realtree look for some reason. I even got a snow hat with that pattern on it, which my wife tells me looks effin'orrible...

Not such a fan of the Giant. I'll let you get the last one of them...!

Funnily enough I've been pondering on that Squadron set for the past 2 weeks.
Truth be told, I don't actually like it..... But I'm trying to convince myself otherwise.

As for Snows.... All I see is the 10's and 13's. With regards to the Giant. It's more of a statement than anything else. Nothing even comes close, regardless whether or not you like it.
Personally I think the Giant will take on a whole new status once stocks run dry and the next generation of collectors appear. But, I'm baffled by the seemingly large number of Mike Horn Rangers that are still available. The Mike Horn sports a unique serrated blade that was never replicated on any other Wenger model - but yet it's the model that no one seems to be bothered about.
I don't claim to know it all, but what I do know is right.

Hm, the biggest problem with the Mike Horn Rangers has always been the price!
It's an expensive "pocket knife" however you look at it. Even discounted it's in the 100 Euro range.

A giant was on my wants list and still is.  It makes sense they'd be harder to find now though, its not like Victorinox will make a delemont version.

It would make a nice piece to put in a wall frame and display.  I just dont know if I could part with $1000 for one.

Completely understand Syph.
I too have faced exactly the same predicament, but I then look at the LM Genus...new they were once discounted to a measly $50, pretty soon I suspect they'll be trading for 10x that. The fact that Wenger is no more and the Giant was primarily built to showcase what Wenger could do, I really don't think anyone needs to exaggerate on what's likely to happen here.

I bought mine about 2yrs ago, took a lot of guts and many many sleepless nights before I eventually caved in. I had to sell a lot of my personal stuff to raise funds....I wouldn't have done it if Wenger hadn't revealed they were stopping production.

A dealer friend ordered out a couple, one for me and one as a 'draw' to his tables at gun and knife shows. Still pricey, but substantially less than the normal going rate. I figured that if I was going to collect SAKs I needed one as kind of the center point of the collection. Used the rationale that it was about the same price as a good quality handgun, and that I would probably never lose money on it (a claim I can not make with most of my handguns - 'Expensive rentals').

I'm not sure how true this is but i've heard from a Victorinox Rep that they are still making the Giant under the Wenger name. I believe it has something to do with patents and making sure no other knife maker will be able to use the Wenger name on their multipurpose knives in the future.

Again, not sure how true this is.

Don't start talking about Mike Horn Rangers, I recently turned down a good offer and don't need to start continue second guessing that decision.   :ahhh

That wouldn't surprise me in the slightest. I never bought into the whiter than white image that Victorinox likes to portray. Business is business and I wouldn't doubt for a second that behind their glossy image they are infact as ruthless as any far eastern company that constantly gets the flak.

Wouldn't surprise me at all!!

Mike.
I probably could do both as I have 2 Rangers AND a 85mm (although no sleeve for that one). Just not sure I want to sell the set.

This thread inspired me to take my Giant out of the box, noticed that the laser and flashlight both still light, rather dimly in the case of the flashlight,  took the batteries out to avoid possible leakage.

They do come up on eBay every now and then, at prices varying between USD800-1400. I bought one at USD620 last year, but the presentation box was rather beat up and the tools had minor scratches on them. My first thought was "how the heck did such a knife manage to get used"?

There is a display one in a local shop near me, I may have to take a look.

Impractical?

Hellooo... it has 145 functions!  8)

It has around 16 knife blades. Very practical if I may say so. You can cut all your potatoes at the same time!
Can your wife even imagine how much time she will save?  :D
