Homemade Leatherman Accessories, Adapters and Ideas
on: December 11, 2015, 07:51:34 AM
Hopefully this thread can be used to Share Home Made Accessories, Adapters or Ideas.  I will start with this one that came about since I Have an Old School Wave without a bit adapter.  Let me know what you think.
I took a inexpensive bit extender and pulled out the extension and tapped down the cylinder so the inside edge corner aligns with the edges of my Wave screwdriver blade and slid it on until the inside magnet touches the blade and holds it in place and now I have a bit adapter.  I will let the pictures explain the rest including the way the handle works.  Has been very handy with bits and 1/4 inch drive sockets!

If you ever work on electronic equipment you will know that the shafts of the screwdriver bits are too short to work on many screws and terminals. The tool bit extender doesn't help as the head is too big. I made a couple of my own by grinding down hex bits and they work great. They fit easily in the front pouch. If you want to try to make your own all you need is a bench grinder and I suggest you buy a couple of each size to allow for botching the first attempt.

Nicely done  :tu:  FYI the MUT bit kit includes a 6.3cm long philips #2 and 1/4" flat double ended bit.

The shafts on the MUT kit drivers are too fat to reach the head of many screws in electronic equipment.

First of all, seen a couple of posts from you today and it's really nice to see more modding around here. Second: may I recommend searching for "long shank hex bit" around your local hardware suppliers? Your solution seems to be a lot of work for few dollars worth of tool. (unlike your other posts!)

I must be missing something. I am already using long shank bits and just grinding the bottom part of the hex to fit the built in tool holder on the charge.

Sorry, never mind me then! I was under the impression that you turned down a normal bit to give it a slim-fit (stupid me being tired!). Now you might understand why it seemed like a little too much work!

I think Alcohol, Tabacco and Firearms should be a convenience store, not a government agency.

Well ... back from the dead!!!

:dunno:

As I've been trying to deal with family matters, work placement, career rethinking, COVID 19 and its vaccination program, etc. Mostly at once, and  it has become somewhat stressful, I decided to let my mind roam free between sites, forums, et. Al.

Looking at frivolous ideas and/or concepts, I came to this one: a writing instrument for Leatherman multi tools!

If Victorinox has a pen for its knife, I want something like that for my tool too! Mind you, not any instrument ... it's portable, recyclable, renewable, with little environmental footprint; can write upside down, under water, under the rain, and it is incredibly accessible and quite universal ... may I present to you, the mighty Leatherpencil!!!

A quick-and-dirty-5-minute-hack, using any old children's school stubbed pencil. Cut to size after sharpening the stub, sand or grind sides until aprox. 3mm wide, remove paint from remaining two angles, and fit to size. Although when I first made it it was more of a proof of concept boredom joke, I found it to be quite useful for marking wood, concrete, pvc, while on site, and even jot down measurements or to-buy list. And what surprised me the most was that even with such a heavy tool as the Wave, it is relatively comfortable to use for the purposes detailed before! You can even put it in a slot of the bit cards for ease of carry.

Not bad at all for a 5 minute freebie!

(Also shown, my awl bit!  :D)

As long as you aren't doing a lot of writing, those pencils should work well and are pretty cool 8) I do love the idea of carrying one in a bit card as well :like: I really love that awl though  Great job on that for sure, Juan  :like:

Thanks Poncho!  :hatsoff:

Most definitely agree on the pencil use. I'd go so far as to say maybe one-time deals; my examples are #2/HB  leads that are easily "consumed", and I will not bother trying to resharpen a stubbed stub (well, maybe on an emergency like, forgot birthday/anniversary card    )!

But useful indeed. :2tu:

Excellent ideas Juan  :like:

Imagine if LM could come up with a pressurised ink pen version of your idea. Like a Fisher Space Pen  :tu:

That reminds me, I wanted to do a awl implement for a while now

:iagree:.  While some may see certain accessories as gimmick I see them as opportunities.  Neat and fun ways to expand our beloved tools.  Why the heck not?  Who says we cant have a little fun even if the accessory isn't used everyday or "needed".

The pencil is a fun idea and seriously can be handy.  The pen is also a fun idea.  A scalpel or other implement for the bit holder just makes sense to me.

That's the reason as to why I decided to share the idea; although I thought of it "as frivolous", I found out that it is quite practical, accesible since "it's there 'til needed without being in the way" and why not, fun.

I did try and made an adapter for Xacto blades, but did not worked out for me as the Wave is quite heavy and cumbersome to use for the precision cuts I needed to make; for scalpels, I'm thinking Metro's blade exchanger!!!! :like: :tu:

Yes do it.  That the fun of these bits.  The blade exchanger and bit holder both want modded parts.  These type threads inspire some interesting things.  Metro certainly inspired a "few" mods.  I love to see y'alls creativity.  Me not so much these days as my time is spent lusting over trads at the moment so my MTs are stock.  Plus I can always reference threads like this when the inspiration strikes.
