'44 Soldier rebuild
on: December 24, 2015, 12:52:46 PM
Picked up an old Soldier earlier in the month ( :hatsoff: to s1xty7 for the tipoff)

It was in pretty good condition on the face of it, but the scales were cracked and there was some rust on the bolsters.  The action was quite good, but a little stiff.  Cheap enough for me to not get too precious about it, I decided to spruce it up a bit.

Here's what it looks like now.  >:D

Just made some 1/8" brass barrel pins (bottom right of the image above) and I'm going to make some new scales and liners for it over Christmas.

Either carbon fibre or some black G10, with full brass liners.

Jaydar's had one made too, I think, but I've not found that yet.

Very interested to see how this one turns out. I'm glad it went to capable hands. I don't see any holes that aren't supposed to be there or melted metal, so already a better start than I'd have. :D

The bolsters on the original one are welded? I can't remember? Do you plan on keeping them?

No pressure then. :D

They're pinned, I think.  There's what looks like a rivet head on the inside of the scale.  I'm not sure if I'll keep them or not - will probably wait until I've made the liners, then see how they look next to the brass.

Isn't that the one you got from etsy?

Yep.  Seemed a good deal, arrived quickly and was in pretty good condition.  Will have to keep an eye out for more, it felt really nice in the hand.

Didn't get very far with this over Christmas, but drilled the springs for the larger centre barrel pin last night and did a trial fit using the old steel liners.  Really struggled to get the knife together - could assemble the opener layer ok, but couldn't get the blade/awl layer built.  Will keep trying.  I tidied the shed too so I've got a bit more space to work - hope to get time to cut the liners and scales soon.

H this has to take top priority in your life right now. Put everything else aside, I'm sure everyone will understand. If it would help I will explain how many people you have waiting on this.

And very nice it looks too! Have you drilled the scales to accept a lanyard or will you leave it? I have my eye on an Enzo kit at some point so I'm interested in your impressions (Can you do Frank Spencer?)

Not trying to blow my own trumpet or anything, but this thread shows the restoration/renovation of a bunch of old Soldiers.
Might give you a few ideas or be some help.

Already got it bookmarked, thanks!  I think it was your thread that got me thinking about refurbing one of these older knives.
