Monrogue's Signal
on: December 29, 2015, 04:31:57 AM
Hey all,
It's been no secret that I've really been enjoying my Signal.  Some of you have likely noticed I managed to dye the yellow bits red (sort of) using liquid rit dye.  Well, while I liked them, they weren't the shade I was looking for.  I ended up ordering replacement parts as I couldn't lighten the darker shade.  This has been an experiment for me as I had no idea what I was doing in terms of getting the normal brighter red I wanted.  I tried three different shades of red (first-cherry, second-scarlet, third-flame), and the first set of parts went through three treatments in an attempt to get the shade I wanted.  Didn't work though, although I do like the shade they ended up being.  However, the dye did a number on the ferro rod (which I discovered after the fact that I could remove after all-didn't think I could originally, but it does pop out with a little prying).  You'll see in the pics the effect the dye had on the rod, which is another reason I wanted a replacement.  So I started fresh with the replacement set, using the flame dye.  It turned out pretty close to what I wanted, so I went ahead and did a second treatment with a slight bit of the flame, and mostly scarlet.  I didn't leave them in quite as long as I didn't want to end up with a darker shade as happened with the first set.  Here are the results, with the old set for reference:

I also made another significant change-I swapped out the wood saw for the metal file from a Charge.  Yes, I know it may seem a bit redundant given the little diamond file already present.  However, I have maybe used a wood saw on a MT or SAK maybe once or twice, and while I like having one just in case, I like having the sweet LM dual file/metal saw better.  Yes, any SAK I carry also has the Vic metal file, but it is rather different to the LM type, and I don't mind having both.  It is still more likely to be used than the wood saw ever is, and for that matter, either metal file/saw could likely function as a wood saw in a pinch, at least for anything minor that a MT would be sawing anyway in most cases, especially in my daily life. Here are some pics:

I really like both changes. The red looks great. Also, I agree with you on the file vs saw issue. I have only used a saw on my MT once, and that was mostly just to test it out.

Those new red pieces sure do stand out better, I like it :tu:

I can understand why you opted to swap the saw for the file, the removable file on the Signal really has its limits.  It will probably be fine to sharpen fish hooks, not likely a whole lot else I would use mine for though.

Did the dye make the ferro rod unserviceable or just affect the looks?

G'Day,

That Signal looks cool. I do like the red over the yellow. Could you please post a pic with the file closed?

Did the file just drop in? I may have to give the Signal a closer look now, pity they still pretty pricey.

Cheers

Pete

Nice job Mo - might I suggest the 'Monsignour'? Or you could just face reality and save time by calling it Harleys.

Thanks man!  Yeah, the sharpener wouldn't be handy for much of anything I'd use the full size one for.  The ferro rod does still work, but just looks crappy, especially when side by side with the new one.

Oh, and yes, the file fit right in, albeit a little snug compared to the saw.  It does rub against the liner lock and the nub down towards the tip.  Doesn't bother anything though.  The nub must have been to help keep the saw in place I guess   I never noticed it before now.

Nice, I want to like the Signal and it's nice to see it adapted to work better. I propose the name "The Rogue Signal", sounds like the title of some spy-novel.
