Celebrating with a different kind of fixed blade
on: January 25, 2016, 02:19:36 PM
Hi folks, some of you may be aware that today is the birthday of the famous Scots Poet Robert Burns, Burns was born in 1759, in Alloway Ayrshire and died in 1796 in Dumfries.

Tonight I will be celebrating his life in the Traditional Scottish way at a "Burns Supper" full Highland Dress will be worn and plenty of Whisky drunk.

Part of the outfit is a Sgian Dubh pronounced Skean Doo, which is a small double edged dagger worn tucked into your sock. Nowadays purely ceremonial but not in the past.

If you are having a wee nip tonight please raise a glass to absent friends.

Very nice.  The closest I come to Scottish culture is watching Still Game on Netflix.

My surname may indicate Scottish ancestry, though this I will never know.

May ye enjoy havin' a wee bevvy the nite.

Thank you, I enjoy Still Game which is filmed round about Glasgow in many areas I know well.

Burns is so well thought of he appears on some of our banknotes. This one has  one of his most famous works "Tam o' Shanter" depicted.

Cheers Boaz, I'm originally from Scotland, born in Hamilton. Our family immigrated to to States in 1975, still have family there. I remember visiting Burns cottage when I was a boy.

So stylish! I'd love to find some relative a couple of generations back from Scotland so as to feel the right to wear a kilt!

I've not gotten my kilt out, but it was haggis for dinner tonight in my household as well.  A wee dram is waiting in the wings as well. ;)
Be excellent to each other and always know where your towel is.

I'm told I have Scottish ancestry, but I'm also told the family does not discuss the pirates and horse thieves in polite company.  I'll have Scotch in honor of Robert Burns tonight.

Nice one Steve, I know Hamilton pretty well. I hope you still have a slight Scots Twang.

If you fancy it give it a go!  I'm sure you could find a reason, plus you get to carry a dagger in your sock!

Thanks guys for all the replies, I had a great night and now have a slightly fuzzy head. I did learn a few things last night, particularly about President Benjamin Franklin.

Burns and Franklin had a relationship and refers to him in his 'Address of Beelzebub' (1789) as the kind of leader some Highlanders, who had been prevented from emigrating, needed:

"Some daring Hancock, or a Franklin,
May set their Highland bluid a-ranklin"

Franklin later spoke at a Burns gathering and was asked to do so again some time later, however refused. Stating that he couldn't try to begin to describe the Poet using words that Burns himself had crafted so well. Franklin was known to carry the works of Burns and could recite many if not all his Poems.

All in all a fabulous insight into two great men.

Cheers.
