Is this a Wenger Swiss Hiker?
on: August 09, 2024, 08:33:06 AM
I can't find it in the Wiki and my Google-Fu isn't giving me enough conclusive evidence.  It only has these 6 tools and no scale tools.  I believe it might be a Swiss Hiker based on some images I've been able to find.  I'm hoping the MTO brain trust could provide me with some conclusive evidence.    :D

The Canyon doesn't have a locking main blade though.

Smart Knives has a a page on the Canyon Lockback. (Though the knife seen therein has a corkscrew, it's otherwise a match.) I awlso ran across this eBay listing for one with a Phillips.

This admittedly minimal research had led me to conclude that this loadout was exclusive to L.L. Bean, and produced with both corkscrews and Phillips (possibly concurrently). Maybe L.L. Bean could be of help?

I found this web page that display it but it calls it a Sportsman which is a three layer knife, yet we can clearly see that what's being shown is a two layer knife.  The box displays Swiss Hiker on one end.  I went ahead and saved the contents of this web page for future reference.

Looks like this website belongs to Wayne (stressmaster5000) but I see he hasn't been active on here since 2022.

The Canyon doesn't have a locking main blade though.

SAKWiki - Says the Canyon does have a locking main blade!
https://sakwiki.com/tiki-index.php?page=Canyon
Although it does have scale tools in the Wiki

Finding the name of a Swiss Army Knife has always been a challenge -
Particularly for the older models and
Particularly for Wenger when you sometimes have variations on tp/tw vs no tp/tw; Phillips vs Corkscrew; Nail-file vs small blade - Sometimes a name spans several variations and
Particularly as you travel across the globe......

And this is before you start looking at dealer specific names or branded models as we see here!!

The model code is always much more reliable -
However the Wiki is organised around the names - Which can bring these types of problems to light

I'd definitely be going with the Canyon for this one though

Stressmaster's page is pretty interesting:
The page is entitled the Sportsman
The box says its a Swiss Hiker
And we think its a Canyon

And Wayne was one of the earlier editors and creators of the Wiki
What hope do we have ?    ???         :o

Very convoluted but very interesting.  I thought only the Evo scales came with the locking blade.

The video also pointed two things I hadn't picked up on yet.  The flat head having a sort of stop/lock when you bear down on it to turn screws, and the reliefs on the shield for both the shield and the
cross.  Very cool.

Well, looks like I'm going to have to keep searching for more examples of this Wenger out in the wild much to my wife's dismay.

Thanks for the input folks!  Much appreciated!

@aztzc
You definitely need to have a cruise around the Wiki a bit more

This page may be of interest:
https://sakwiki.com/tiki-index.php?page=Locking+Systems

And the screwdriver/BO page also describes the Wenger SD locking feature

Very cool!  Hadn't seen those yet.

So much to see in the wiki that I could probably spend half a day reading and not notice the time go by.

They called the locking screwdriver deal a Packlock.  Push on the driver a little, and the blade slides back enough on the pivot to prevent closing.  Remove the pressure, the blade is free again.  Ingenious.
I saw where a fellow bought a Wenger and was conplaining that the screwdriver was supposed to lock, BUT HIS DIDN'T.  Naturally he didn't realize it was an automatic sort of lock.  A screwdriver is more likely to fold as you are using it than a blade actually, since you are pushing into the screw to turn it.  Best wishes.  G

I also just read on how to "actually" use the wire stripper.  I never realized that's how it was supposed to be used.
