Messing around with a couple ideas
on: February 17, 2016, 06:29:34 PM
I cannot pick a tool set to save my life.  I've gone back and forth and forth and back.  I have 2 blades and openers that I love, blades are small clip point and a Victoria stamped main blade.  The openers are a sharpened bottle opener and PAT can opener.  I wanted to make a simple knife with those. I also have a backside phillips with file that I wanted to include.  Then theres the no hole awl that seemed like it should be there too.

Anyway I mocked up this tool and then I began to over think it by feeling like why not add scissors.

The second tool is an idea I've seen here and thought it was a good one.  It's an all tool no blade SAK.  Openers, scissors, pliers, saw, I used fish hook because I don't have a file.  I would have loved to add a mag glass and inline philips but I gave the mag glass to a member.  It's no biggie since I have a Champ that I can sacrifice.

Backside tools are awl, chisel, fine driver, phillips with file ( I was thinking corkscrew ).

Well they'll sit and I'll think more.  I continue to wreck those bushings but the whole process is not as complicated as I thought.

The hard part is WHAT TOOLS DO I WANT  :ahhh

Whats the advantage of your two "special" openers?

The no blade SAK is interesting for sure.

Not a thing.  I just like them since the bottle opener has the sharpened inner part and the can opener has the PAT on it.

The no blade SAK is something I've seen here on MTO ( I think ).  I've pondered it for a bit since I'll always have a MT with blades I figured a little tool with everything else would be neat.

Definitely no blade SAKs on here, I've seen a few nice ones.

I've often wondered about a bladeless SAK. One thing I can't figure is what tools would be better for the outer layers; I'm thinking SAK pliers should be one. Then again, why not just take a SwissChamp and remove the knife blades? Or do the same to a WorkChamp...

I have batted that idea around as well.  Then second I think, great idea I come back to feeling the SC for me is such a great SAK why bother.

These and other reasons are why I admire those who have found their "perfect" SAK.

The pliers are better in the middle, IMO.  You need to use a thicker liner on either side of the pliers to create clearance for the pivot.  If the pliers are on the outside then the cutout in the liner means you can see the inside of the scale.  Functionally no different, I just don't like the way it looks.

The hard part is WHAT TOOLS DO I WANT  :ahhh

Yup.  Even though you now know you can put any combination you like together, it doesn't get any easier to choose.

That is a tough one!

I guess I have never given much thought on a blade less anything but if I were gonna go that route cause I carry a MT, I would try to make the sak so it complimented the MT with tools like the mag layer, plier's (super tweezers), scissors and one the back I would put the cork screw to hold the mini screw driver and the hook.

Just some ideas but I would still keep the main blade on the sak as two is one and one is none!!!  :)

Thanks for complicating it

I agree with the inline driver and mag glass.  I just don't have a mag glass  :(.  I still have it mocked up alone with the other mod.  I have to step away so I don't go bonkers  :ahhh

Like I have said before, a person like me needs a Swisschamp (for all the tools one might need except the combo tool) with the scales that have torx screws (like Syph has) so we can add/remove tools to fit our needs that day!  Hence, a customizable sak.

I would like something like the compact with the added mag/inline philips layer!  That would be my perfect EDC sak, at least at this time!  :)
