Fire, Steak and whiskey, all necessities to me  :D If you're worried about storage and transport fear not, just put one of these in your kit and strap a crate of whiskey on each side, a bit of training to get her to follow you through the wilderness and you'll be sorted!

LOL!!!!  I almost spit up my drink when I saw this!  :D
Sometimes change is a good thing, other times not so much!

My camping excursions are pretty sedate at present. No need to pack for anything extreme as I'm usually a short walk from civilization. So here is my list for a causal weekend camping trip:

General equipment:
Tent
Air mattress (I don’t sleep on the ground anymore)
Sleeping bag; queen size..for two  ;)
Tarp
Propane stove
Steel cup (2)
Enamelware skillet
Sporks
Food (mostly quick stuff: oats, pancake mix, canned soups, etc)
Lamp (battery lantern)
COFFEE GRINDER (hand cranked mill grinder....you NEED coffee!)
Plastic cone coffee dripper and paper filter

Personal items:
Wet weather gear
Multi-tool
Commando wire saw (don’t really need this...it's just fun to randomly saw things. :D )
Hygiene bag
Matches
Bic lighter
Flashlight
Cell phone
Change of underclothes

Tent?
:D Sorry.
Overrated! ;)

That depends on where you are camping.
Sleeping under the stars can actually work out here in the West,
but if I did it when I lived back in New England
I would have been carried off by the mosquitoes!

i do like this thread alot.i wish here would be more outdoor guys and action/discussion.

and its so nice to see how different opinions, gears and methods each of us has, some of you like to drag all comfortable things along, with truck, and between my way and the ones mentioned first,is sooo many opinions and habits.

i like to pack light and hike along the trails, but i do like camping grounds too,but im bit odd here atleast at winters cause i try to avoid using tent at all.i like to stay over-night in ready lean-tos made from logs or do one by myself, and sit by fire just chattin and eating or hittin some cards.and if i get a chance, ill try to make some fish too,or what ever instead of ready noodlecup-soups(or what you call those dried foods).its cool(to me) to make fire with striker, and try to remain all handcraft/outdoor/survival skills.i just hope that kids we have here would do some hiking too.and not just play playstation etc nerdie stuff.

I camp quite a lot but usually only for one/two nights while im walking so it's just about travelling light.  Change of clothes, lightweight towel, waterbottle, sleeping bag, tent, roll mat, alcohol, flapjacks and jerky and then essential stuff like torch, lighter, multi/saks/ducktape and rope (now paracord since i discovered its so cheap).  Of course this in England where nothng is 'essential' as you are never more than half an hour from civilisation (and pubs....) as long as you know where you are.  I've always got my phone on me so its just a case of looking on the gprs if desperately need something.  If i was going hiking somewhere i was unlikely to be close to villages/towns then i'd totally rethink what i would take.

I may be wrong but I did not see any mention of ducktape and bailing wire. Extremely useful.

I do lazy camping rather than extreme camping:
Dome tent
Sleeping bag and a foam mat
Tranger cooker/pots
SAK of the day/LM etc
LED torch - long runtime so I can also use it as a tent light, plus a safety pin on the lanyard to pin to roof of tent of an evening
tea/coffee/pot noodles/biscuits/water
airline folding toothbrush with mini toothpaste stuffed in handle
music - nxt-style flatpanel speakers built into CD case
12V / 240V mains inverter for the car to power phone chargers etc

Add cash and convenient pub and you're good!

Must haves;
tent
sleeping bag
sleeping mat
cooker + plate/spork etc.
weather correct clothing
waterproofs (in Scotland, you always need waterproofs ::))

Everything else is a luxury, but I like my luxurys. :D

No camera this time, mine has gone to the great photo booth in the sky and my wife won't let me take hers.  To be fair there is a good chance I'd break it.  :D  There will be someone with a camera though so I should get some shots to show you all.

Up here it's not the bears we worry about (we eat them for breakfast), it's the Werewolves you've got to watch out for.  :(
