Boooiiinnnnggggg.

I think we can do it guys. I suppose it really depends on how much gear we'll all be bringing. I'm bringing a lot  :angel:

Do you guys think that you could get one of you, and both's gear on the back seat? The boot may be a bit cramped.

I think it's a goer.

Tent, rucksack, case with tools in.  That's me done and Ryan is coming on the train so can't imagine he's going to be too bulky :)

Neil

I'll have a 35litre rucksack and a smile on my face :)

The question is, will Ryan get searched at the train station this time?  :ahhh

 :pok:  I'd make sure you have a printout of the event details in with your tools mate.

As we can now bring the van (thanks to Nick), I will make sure I have a decent supply of water (washing and drinking) on board so no-one travelling light need worry about that - assuming there won't be a supply available of course?

Sorry guys, was in the workshop (garage :D).....

Yeah we'll get everyone in, we'll just need to put my toolbox in the middle I think, else we'll all be feeling seasick by the time we get there.

I bought a paraffin lamp, just been playing with it, and it'll do just fine I think.

I've been after a lamp for a while, and today I nearly bought a campinggaz lantern, but then stumbled across this paraffin lamp for £8. The guy in the shop recommended using lamp oil rather than paraffin as it burns longer, and I was pleasantly surprised by how much light it actually gives off. And the best bit - it smells like camping :0

OK, I understand the "it smells like camping" bit but is there any good reason to go with one of these over a modern electric light?

Educate me :)

There was a guy selling a big Coleman lantern at the carboot sale this morning, wanted £25 for it, so I wasn't tempted.

Three reasons I found:

1) The oil lamp is a fair bit lighter than most of the equivalent modern lamps I found;
2) £5 worth of oil will last a lot longer than £5 worth of batteries;
3) They are just way cooler than modern plastic  :multi:

Some of the Coleman lamps are great, if a bit pricey, and I'd ideally like a Tilley, but again they are really pricey. The one I got is much simpler than the Coleman and Tilley - not quite as bright as there's no pressure on the oil, but there's no mantel or other parts to worry about.

I used to come here a lot.

Yep the need to pump and prime and all those spare fiddly bits puts me off the fancier fuel burning lamps.  I think a wicked lamp is a better bet.

I see a lot of cheap old paraffin lamps around.  They do look the part and I keep being tempted to pick one up...  and convert it to LEDs  >:D

I looked at various lamps, battery powered, gas, wind-up, paraffin etc, and truth of the matter is I just liked the look of this thing. I'm not really bothered how efficient it is to be honest.

In fact - I just found a pic at http://www.base-camp.co.uk/chalwyn.htm

Apparently, they were British Army issue in the days of Empire!

Well I think that's a great looking bit of kit.  Call me old fashioned but I'd far rather that lighting my way than a set of LEDs.  :P

Such lamps are still SI around here. The army uses them as emergency lighting, when setting up camp in low-key situations, and for outdoor training sessions. They're so elementary they just can't fail. :tu:

I just realised - that's not the one I got!

Mine is identical in every feature, except it not as tall - the glass globe is probably about half that size I think. Mine is a Tropic Hurricane, not the "Far East".

Dudes and dudesses,

If you need to save room on the journey....none of you have to bring a tent.  I have managed to get some room in our cabins.  They are basic, it would mean a sleeping back on the floor but they have HEAT and are wind/rain proof.

Tents are still on if you want BUT there is an alternative.

(Should I have PM'd you all as this makes us look like wimps....ah well too late now :salute:)
