What a damp, dark, and dreary day it is in the upper NY state area... but the show must go on.

Good morning good folks.

@shovelbill

Profound thoughts are always welcome.

Remember, “Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery!”

When I was young, raising a family, starting a life with responsibility, I would not have been able to buy a LM of any style or justify the expense to my bride. And, yes I know I would have SETTLED for a  copy/imitation!

At today’s prices the tools are even more difficult to justify until you use everyday and learn to understand the difference in quality and cost and apply  lifetime purpose and ROI.

Interesting the point you bring up. I had a conversation with the lad on this very subject and what he was dealing with. It went something like this...

In the early '90s, when starting out with my favorite ex-wife, whom I'm still friends with, she had noted that I didn't have a lot of stuff...and that possessions didn't seem important to me, so why would I spend a small ransom on Wesco and White's boots, Snap-on tools, and Schott leathers...old Harley-Davidson motorcycles? Well, it's an investment...they are lifetime tools. When you spend 14 hours a day on your feet, you want the best comfort and protection you can afford... you want tools that make your job easier, and faster, with a lifetime warranty...Heritage items are re-craftable and can be passed down to the next generation, etc. I suggested to him that a poor man can't afford to buy cheap tools... He got that, a lightbulb turned on, and had that conversation with his bride. It went well for him. They say communication in any relationship is key.. I'll offer that comprehension is more important, lol...I'll go back to my corner now.

👍.

That lesson is not taught!  It is learned by living and doing.

My father, was 4F, bad feet, bad back!   Always bought Red Wing 12” boots for his work, a Commercial Painter.
When he bought his OWN paint brushes, he bought the best,  natural hair, and he took care of them, as much time to clean  and condition as most jobs required. He bartered his services for our dental care, or other.

Wall papering tools, the same. He was a true PRO.

That lesson was passed down to me, buy quality, use properly,  and take care of what you own.   It cost less to do this than buying replacements.  But, my first (& only) wife and did compromise, buy the best we could afford for purpose.

Ah, an ancient Chicago Cutlery P22...touted as a folding hunter it has a wonderful versatile blade. I believe the scales are walnut, and I'll hazard the blade is high-carbon steel, but never researched it and I don't know. My father gave me this and he was a K-bar, Schrade, Uncle Henry guy...I've rotated this and an old Buck 110 for decades. I also had a fantastic Chicago Cutlery L30, which was stolen by a cop long ago, but that's a story for another day, lol...

I like your Pop  :tu: Most of my brushes are old Purdy. How's it go..." buy once, cry once?"

"Only" - Lol...yes, compromise is often necessary and becomes an art form of sorts, and can be very satisfying.

I like your signature. My day always starts with gratitude as I continue to be allowed to open my eyes upon waking. Not everyone is afforded that opportunity and if that's the only thing that goes well that day, it's still a good day...

Great posts today guys. Great conversation LC and Shovelbill. I totally agree with the buy the best quality tool you can afford. It may take a while to save up for it, but down the road when it has given you years of faithful service the cost will be long forgotten, but the pride in ownership will not have diminished. Steve great action and pairing today. Lovely, stag on that traditional you are carrying.

Here is my contribution for today.

Very cool daily carry, and I meant to comment the other day, but I'm a senile citizen, oopsie. Is that a Ward...a re-stamped Kutmaster/Utica stockman knife?

Thanks, Winchester made a lot of the Wards. I'm not sure if they made this one but I don't think it was made by Utica.

Great conversation LC and Shovelbill and JonesE.

@shovelbill, fair to say HD shovels is where the name came from?  I saw a young fella ( 30s ) on a shovel and the only reason I knew that was cause I said "awesome bike".  He responded with "it was my dads shovel" with a look that beamed with such pride.

Thank you,  on AWL 3 comments,  :hatsoff: :hatsoff:

It took a looong while to learn compromise!   I practiced many techniques over the 46 years we shared together, but the best was 5 words, “Yes dear, you are right!”, said in the most sincerest voice…🥺

That coupler is too skinny. And the color looks wrong.

It ain't right.

Might be why the glue isn't holding.

It held for 20 years so I'm not sure but I think when they installed the new furnace they probably stressed the joint but yes the old glue failed on one side of the joint. The other side is solid. I cleaned it the best I could and used liberal amounts of glue and primer so hopefully it will hold for another 20 years  :tu:
