Black oxide run
on: March 01, 2016, 04:01:27 AM
Who would be interested in a black oxide run of various parts and items? I'm looking to see if this would be beneficial to me and the forum. I don't have a price yet but I'm going to ask the people I found for a sample run and see how the coating is. So who wants in? Thanks
If I remember correctly, wait, what was I saying?

I still need a micra or two done, so depending on price I may be interested.

Depending on the price I might be interested. They never did a LM Pulse in BO and I think that would be cool !

I don´t know how much hassle international shipping would add, but I might be interested.

This may be a silly question but to do a tool like the Micra or the Pulse would it have to be in parts or can they do a whole tool without disassembly ?

I'm able to disassemble anything I send, but others may need help. Just let us know when you get the quote.  :tu:

First off, I would absolutely be interested in a BO run. Second, you can get a BO kit for around 70  dollars,so that might also be an option.

Most BO Kits (at least in europe...) only offer cold black oxidation and will only work on noin-stainless steel as real BO uses pretty nasty chemicals.

I don't fully understand. Can some one lay it out for me?

Black oxide is a controlled form of rust on stainless. It uses specific chemicals at very specific temperatures to achieve this. This in turn creates a protective barrier for future rust and gives it a nice black coating.

Got that part. Not sure what Grant is asking? Is it a service where you send in your tools to be oxidized? Or setting up a run of certain tools to offer?

Oh! Yeah I'm trying to see how much it would cost to do a run. Not doing my own tools ATM.

Gotcha. I've been reading too many post at once.  :megaslap: if it's a possibility Doing a SS MP600 with BO tools  scissors instead of file as well.

As long as you have the tools to be coated its a very easy job to do.

You could also do that easily with a donor BO MP600.

I have a FrankenGerber.

BO body. SS head. Then mixed BO and SS tools.

So it'd be doable to have the tools in an alox electrician coated to blacked out?

Would there be much of a change in dimensions to effect reassembly?

I ask this as once I decided to have a Mini Samaritan cerokoted and ended up having to beg the maker to put it back together for me. He very nicely obliged me and it turned out to be a nice piece. I'm sure cerokote is likely fairly thicker as opposed to black oxide is though.

Would like a black bladed electrician though.

Black oxide is only a few molecules thick, so no real change in dimensions you and me could measure.
And yes, if you disassemble the electrician, you can have the tools and springs black oxidized.

I am not interested in participating, just voice an opinion: why BO but not more durable tool coating like TiAlN? Only a few micron thick while retaining surface finish.

I'm not familiar with that. Is it similar to what Fisher uses on some of their pens?
