Can you help me figure out what kind of SAK I have?
on: March 01, 2016, 04:13:13 AM
I was given this knife by my late great grandfather, but I have no idea of its make.

The inscription on the blade says Wenger Delemont Switzerland Stainless

There are photos in the attachments, but here is a list of the features:

*Large blade
*Nail File/Nail Cleaner
*patented spring-less, self-sharpening
*reamer, awl (back side)
*Can opener
*patented locking screwdriver, cap lifter, wire stripper
*Phillips head screwdriver (back side)
*double cut wood saw
* metal file (no saw teeth)
*fish scaler

the scales once held a tooth pick and tweezers, but are long since lost.

Thanks in advance for the help

Well it is a Wenger that is the maker, they have since been taken over by Victorinox.  But at any rate that is all I can really say I can not find a model name to attach to it.

But if you want an opinion on what to do with it, I would carry it.  Personally I prefer Vic but Wengers are good solid knives.and it seems in Good condition.

Or keep it some where safe and hand it down to you great grand kids

It is a Wenger, probably model number 1.22.03.

Its name may be Classic 22, but that's iffy.  SmartKnives lists it as a Monarch Original, but that is made-up.

A good solid knife.

Whatever it is, is a great knife!
You might get some replacement toothpick and tweezers, maybe even some new scales from Victorinox.

Welcome!

Thanks guys. I appreciate  the help. I do carry it with me all the time. I just noticed  that the toothpick broke off inside the scale, so that might be problematic  if I want to replace  it.

You can quite easily remove the scales and replace them with a bit of care Alie, have a look at the modding sticky here;http://forum.multitool.org/index.php/topic,43303.0.html

They are relatively easy to pop off, just take something thin (like a butter knife) work it under the scales and and they will come off allowing you to clean it out and get rid of what is left of the toothpick. To put it back on put some cloth on the scales to protect them then apply even pressure and they should snap into place, ideally you should a vise.

So if I took the scales off, would I then have access to the pins holding the whole knife together, because I really do need to deep clean it. there is only so much one can reach with Qtips and compressed air.

Yes you can, just be fore warned that the knife may never be the same if you start messing with the pins.  That being said for cleaning I would just take out the pin for the corkscrew that way you can take out the back springs. (Also that way you would not re-peen the main tools)

Also recently I was surprised by how clean I got a knife with dish soap and toothbrush, soaking can also be a good method too.

I just cleaned it like you suggested and it looks much better, although the toothbrush i used in now stained black and may support a tiny eco system from all the crap I removed.

They work great! The small end brush is pretty narrow and will get down into the bays better than a toothbrush.   :tu:

They are relatively easy to pop off, just take something thin (like a butter knife) work it under the scales and and they will come off allowing you to clean it out and get rid of what is left of the toothpick. To put it back on put some cloth on the scales to protect them then apply even pressure and they should snap into place, ideally you should a vise.

I use a watch back knife made for popping off snap-on watch backs. Thin enough to get under the scales but not sharp enough to cut you, and the tip is rounded sufficiently that it won't stab you either. Victorinox makes a very nice Uhren Offner (German for Watch Opener) with a case back blade. The blade of a decent watch back knife is hard enough that the aluminum liners and brass pins won't ding it.

Scales can only be popped off and put back on a couple times at most. If putting on scales that have been used before I use a bit of Welder in the scale hole that will fit over the pin bushing to help hold it on. It's good contact adhesive, dries "clear" (slightly translucent) and has some hardness but doesn't get brittle, so it will give some before breaking adhesion (thinking about coefficient of thermal expansion mismatch between brass and celidor).
