Tamiya Mad Bull restoration
on: April 11, 2016, 10:52:10 AM
Ok so I'm jumping the gun here big time. I won a Tamiya Mad Bull 1/10scale R/C car last night on eBay. It's looking like something of a fixer upper. So this thread will follow the rebuild and possible upgrading of the Mad Bull.

All being well,it'll arrive tomorrow....

Ok, from the pictures it is easy to tell that it needs a bigger engine... ideally one that runs on methanol so its noisy too... :P

Sorry, couldn't resist :kirky:

Can you tell a RC-noob what we got in the guts? I mean I get the basics but I need info!

What you see Beat, is essentially the Vic Spartan of hobby grade R/C cars.

27mhz radio reciever(Acoms),servo operated speed controller, 540 Mabuchi motor(27 turn). Shocks are simple undampened springs, with adjustable preload.

Basically,it's a quick, but simple car for messing around in the park or back garden. Speed is ,well we pitch them as 25mph at work, but 15mph+ is more likely.

The plan is to replace the speed controller with a digital unit, which give wider and smooth spread of acceleration; replace the shocks with oil filled, damped units for a plusher ride and better handling;replacing the plastic brushings with roller bearings;possibly changing to smaller wheels for better acceleration and possibly upgrading the motor to torque-ier unit

Oh,and a new paint job!

Here's the update after the system check....

I think I may have gotten something close to the deal of the century here! Steering servo is fine, throttle servo is fine, motor sings like a homesick Angel!

It's fitted with stock plastic bushings, but there's 8 roller bearings in the box of spares(ie junk),plus I'd rollers fitted to the TT01 chassis I'm cannibalising for the electronic speed controller. Gearbox sounds...well,sound. Mechanically, this may just be up and running by the end of the weekend!

hobby I very often wanted to get into, no idea where to start, and at one point I very nearly got a jumpstart to an Elcon Cleon : http://www.elcon-models.com/en/16-cleon-mmx

Thanks Kirky...

"sings like an angel" is that similar to the noise a 10MB disk made back in the days of the mighty XT?

It's my own take on a combo of the Sahara and Wrangler logos, using his last name, which happens to be french for "the mountain" (not game of thrones )

So,here's the next update....

The analog speed controller has been removed, the electronic unit has been installed, and tested.

The parts to repair my Rising Fighter arrived today, and have been installed.

Dinner is late tonight because I've been playing cars

Pics to come later :tu:

Ok,so technically this isn't the Mad Bull, but what the hell!

I've had the Rising Fighter for years, but it's been left sitting,for...well years! I'd fitted new steering rods at the weekend, but on its first run,a lamppost jumped out in front of it,breaking the upright

Fortunately,it's cheap and easy to replace :D

Good as new.

For those wondering, the tools are Bladeless MP600,LM P.U.G,and Bugnard Harvester

And back to our main feature....

Being the patient soul I am I was going to wait til Sunday to replace the speed controller, and do the bearings at the same time, but no... :kirky:

So,original fit

Analog speed controller removed

Tub emptied of electrics

And with the digital unit

This looks like an awful lot of fun.  I bet you are looking forward to getting it out and running it somewhere.

This thread is right up my ally Kirky ole boy!!  It's really making me want to get the driveshafts I need for my HPI Savage.  I've gotta find stronger ones though, as the LRP .28 I put in it twists them like pretzels!
