Camp(er), Scout folding knife thread
on: April 13, 2016, 07:47:52 PM
After getting a Texas Camp Knife I decided to post some pictures and some information, and start a thread on camp/scout knives
For me a camp(er) – scout knife should have the ability to cut items, open cans, let you whittle, drill the odd hole and so on, that is, basically do what a standard SAK does.
The 98 are made in 3 types, Camp, Cattle and Whittler. The camp knife I got was an SFO, in yellow jigged bone.

It is a large knife…

The tools. They all have halfstops

The reamer is a fluted design, with a dark colour on the inside and polished on the outside.

flushThe backsprings are pretty l with the liners, even at the halfstop position.

Marks

All out

Compared with a buck 110
(the blade size and thickness is similar!)

And some other

Overall, nice finish, the can opener is a bit hard to open, huge, solid, begs to be used, carbon steel, so it will rust. If it was SS.....

Thanks they are, Camillus U.S. has been used and I took some of the curve off the front of the blade. The Ulster is I think unused.

Great thread with great pics!!!! Love the Cattle Knife DKS but outta my price range. If I didn't already have a ton of Camp style knives (SAKs) it might be different but I can't justify $160+ for one (not anymore).

You guys have seen them before, but if you haven't, here's the non SAKs :D

I knew there were more

 :D

Nice camp knives. Yes, having a sak makes these mainly collectors items. I use the RR occasionally.

The sfo models were about $20 more. I think these were the most expensive and complex models produced so far by GEC.

My first knife was a 4 blade boy scout knife. Always liked the pattern but don't it carry much now.
I've slowly been picking up a few, 1 by 1 over the last 30 years.
I have a Boker Magnum Classic coming, it might be in by Saturday.

No camp/scout collection would be complete without a MIL-K, or two.
The two on the left are original MIL-k's from 1997 and 2003, the others are Marbles knock-offs.
I gave away the one I was issued, wish I hadn't done that now. :(
I split open one of the marbles & took off the bottle & can opener and turned it into a shop knife and scraper.

Thanks DKS and ducttapetech.

Still looking for a 3 blade boy scout knife, that should round out the collection nicely.

I share a deep love & admiration for "scout/camp style" pocket knives, especially early Bokers...They're nifty lil' buggers, eh?

The standard model of that Boker (in stag, however) is my grail knife.  When I was in Scouts, I used a Vic Fieldmaster. My first "official" Scout Knife was a 1950s Imperial Cub Scout, purchased a couple years back. I fixed it (the liner/handle kept sliding off the pin), kept it some months, then gave it to a friend who is a Scoutmaster.

Remington, the first official BSA knife. Made in the early 1930s.

Awesome! Funny, but I find myself using my scout knife for cutting chores more so than any other pocket knife I own.

1994 Remington Camp knife

Basically has 3 blades and a bottle opener/screwdriver

large and heavy, Derlin jigged scales, SS so it can be used without fear of rusting
The pull is on the weak side.

I'll see if I can get that done lol Reminds me of the story about the,"Year Knife" that Joseph Rodgers made that had nearly 2,000 blades on it.The story was they employed a person whose job it was to open each blade;wipe them down and lubricate the joint if necessary and then close it one at a time. Supposedly it took two weeks to accomplish this and then he would start all over again!
