Have you ever flown?
on: April 17, 2016, 06:32:19 AM
One of those odd questions that came up. How many people have flown at least once in their life. Commercial, general or military. There's a fairly reliable figure of around 80% of adult US citizens. World-wide there's a SWAG of around 5%. Suspect that's way too low as it implies Americans are the vast majority of fliers.  Just curious as to how many members here have ever flown.

Mostly from NY to Az, for summer vacation to visit family, but with sometime stops along the way, other flights once from Az to Ca, and Oh to Ny, but that's it.

Aussie here, I've flown many times on works dime, and several times when I've paid.  I don't like it ( I get nervous during take-off and landing) so I haven't flown for over ten years now.

My worst experience was a gung-ho glider pilot showing me just what his unpowered air-craft was capable of, he wouldn't calm down even when I warned him I suffered from motion sickness - I caught most (but not all) of my vomit in the bag  ::)

Flown once ... to Norway. It were wonderful two weeks.

But I´m not a friend of it. I prefer it to  have the control. Not liking going by plane or train.
And the pressure difference made my ears ache. I really hated it. The food was horrible IIRC.

I have no problem with being inside a tiny can going at 900 kph higher up than the peak of Mt Everest, I do often have problems sharing the can, and the procedures getting into and out of the can. On the other hand, I actually like airline food. It's sort of a little adventure in itself, and the closest I'll ever get to astronaut food. I dreamt of going to space when I was a kid.

Few times. I hate it. Not as much as sea ships. Do not fly when you are sick. I popped my ears one time flying sick. Damn it hurts, and i did not hear anything for many days.

Considering my paternal grandparents lived on the US west coast near Seattle, and my maternal grandparents on the Canadian east coast in Halifax where I spent a good chunk of my youth, I've flown across Canada several times, and now that I've moved to Spain, hopping the Atlantic Ocean every couple years.

Longest trip so far was Vancouver to London UK.

Not a huge fan, but it's a necessity.

The difficult we do immediately, the impossible takes a little longer.

I've flown nationally and internationally, in commercial aircraft, private aircraft and military aircraft.  And in helicopters as well as fixed wing craft.

I much prefer smaller craft as the airlines are starting to feel like getting on a bus, only with a lot more molestation for the privilege of being treated like cattle.

I have but not a lot, but I really sort of want to be in a air accident.

5% seems really low, last time flying to the UK it seemed like my American passport was out of place in a sea of UK passports.  But then again I was flying BA to and from Florida, (I really noticed it on the flight to Orlando).

I was in a 757 that had to make an emergency one engine landing into a snowstorm in Cleveland coming back from Arizona once. The flight crew handled it so smoothly that if they hadn't told us the reason for it you would have never noticed. Well, you would have noticed that you were in Cleveland..... ::)

Not much but yep.  Bush planes mostly.  My neighbor back home had one, and I worked a summer for the ministry of natural resources cataloging aerial phototgraphs taken by bush planes.  We got to go up for a photo run a few times.

Commercial, mostly for business at my first job and only to the US.  I went to texas and new jersey mostly.

For vacation just once to mexico.  Got sick from the food and have no urge to go back.  :D

I have been known to partake in a bit of flight.
Commercial, too many times to count, international and domestic Twin prop through to A380
Helicopter, Grand Canyon
Batcopter, yes Batcopter
Balloon, as you would expect very Balloony
P51 Mustang, low and fast, and upside down (aerobatic routine).
A fighter jet or proper aerobatic aircaft is on the to do list.

Seems an appropriate time to flop this out again

I've flown as well, mostly on Ryanair 737's, between Ireland and Spain.
I like aviation stuff, so its fine for me, though I'd really like a ride in a small plane!!!
Funny this topic came up, I am due for a flight later today to spain. I'm downloading charts so I can see which taxiways and such the pilot takes.
Hooked, like everyone else. ;)

All hail the hook!

haven't flown in a few years but for a time I flew 3 - 4 times a years for my job. Living on an island only way off is by boat or plane so even my kids have flown multiple times. We've taken the ferry too, think they enjoyed that more :)

First time I flew I was still in nappies, I'm told I really enjoyed bouncing up and down and my father frantically worked the manual hydraulic pump to try and lower the landing gear.

What I can recall....
Cessna 152
Cessna 182
Cessna 210
Cessna Caravan
Some turbo prop KingAir.
DC-3 and puked my guts out..
727
737
747

The safest I've ever felt in a plane and the flying I enjoyed the most was in a friend's ultralight.
He informed me the airframe was rated past 6G, he's a great pilot, so I knew if anything went wrong I would probably be passed out before the (flimsy) plane broke up.
You never get the hollow-stomach feeling, and flying over scenic country is an experience second probably only to a hot air balloon.
Because it's relatively slow it's a great platform to take stunning photos.
