Blacksmithing class

Blacksmithing Class

So I got done with my blacksmithing class today, I did not take many pictures, I did take pictures this morning and evening for day 1 and day 2 progress.  But I will try to describe was we did.

So the first project was an s hook.  This was done by drawing the end into a point and then scrolling the tip (hit the tip just over the edge of the anvil).  Then use a jig to bend it into a hook.  Then repeat on the other end.  Given that in the previous class I took (which was about 3 hours long) had us do a hook on the anvil I would have preferred learning that but I am sure it was much faster to do it with a jig.  The s hook was done before lunch.

Next, project an offset hook (basically a hook to mount on a wall) starting with a bar the end was drawn into a point, however unlike the s hook the point was only in one direction.  The hammering was angle the edge then flat on the face.  This point was then scrolled and put in the jig creating a smaller hook.  We put a fish tale on the other end.  A fish tail uses the other face of the hammer the narrow side,  hitting it so the metal splays out and the hammer puts ribs in making it look like a fish tail.

The third project was to take bar the same size as the big hook and basically halve its width and draw out the length.  Now this was good practice and took a lot of work, but it was frustrating as there was no indication that this was anything other then an exercise and it was a lot of work (but as I said good practice and a worthwhile use of time).  Another guy in the class grumbled to me that this was useless as he would just buy the right sized stock.

The teacher also said how to fit your hammer, the length should be the same as your forearm and palm, the handle should allow you to reach the fleshy part of your hand, and the face of the anvil should be the same highs as your knuckles when you make a fist and hold it down are your side.

So end of day one

Day 2

More work on the bar evening it out to the proper size.  Then come the plan it is a heart shaped trivet.  So draw out the end in to a point like the larger hook.  Then mark the center point and draw out the other end so the two are of equal length.  I would just like to say I got it perfectly by sight backed up by the ruler.  Then heat it quench half of it to put it in the vice and bend it to put the point in the heart.  Then scroll one end then the other make them roughly even and close it so the lobes touch.  These scrolls were more fun and challenging, as to start with you used the horn and the worked all over the anvil to get the right angle for the desired affect.

The hook was bent cold on the same jig and the holes were drilled.  I have to say I am disappointed that we didn't heat it up and use the anvil.

Overall it was a good weekend and I learned a great deal.

Very cool. I hope to one day take a similar class (maybe even make a forge in my future yard!)

I've been watching forged in fire and respect this craft even more that I originally did.  Sounds like a great way to spend some time and have fun as well.

Did you make that SAK too?  If so, maybe they need to put you in the advanced class!  :D

Seriously, great work there!  I look forward to seeing what else you come up with!

Well I have now been hired as a blacksmith (wasn't even the only applicant) at Fort Delaware.  So, I look forward to being able to play around and improve.

Personally I blame Kirky for this. :D
