Spirit butter knife?

Anyone have any problems with the spirit butter knife?  The X model is about 40 euros more!

The butter blade works fine, but I prefer the more traditional spear/drop point profile.  Imagine opening a box with the butter blade.  All of the wear occurs right on the end of the serrations, because there is no "belly" as with a more traditional blade shape.  But otherwise, no problems.  The serrations will retain a working edge longer than a plain edge would, but will also be a little more difficult to sharpen.

It has it's limits, any piercing cuts are difficult, and it's not ideal for food prep because of that and the serrated grind being only on one side. Good for cooked steak, not so good for fresh tomatoes if that helps.  :salute:

Ive never had an issue with mine yet. Rather like the fact it's blunt tipped!

Same here  ;).

I own Spirits with the butterblade and with the "traditional blade shape", and I prefer the butterblade.  Never let me down, and I love the fact that it looks very "non threatening" (not that the "traditional blade shape" on a Spirit or SAK looks like a tactical dagger, but you know what I mean  ;)).

Exactly what I was trying to get at :tu:

I have been very happy with my Spirit with butter blade. Sometimes I carry a dedicated folder with it if I think I may need to do a lot of cutting on a particular day, but most of the time it is solo carried. I just drop it in my back pocket and go on my merry way.

That's what I do. Spirit plus Compact is a good way to go. You get a plain edge knife, bigger scissors, and the Compact's scale tools.

I always prefer to have the knife on my MT as a backup option, in case I need to do anything suspect with a blade. By which I mean that I'd like to pick between the two if possible. In case you have to do something gnarly to your blade, it's easier to replace a SAK than a SwissTool.
May it be as the Pattern has chosen.

I use a Spirit with the butter blade, and all things being equal I would prefer the standard spear point. There are some cutting jobs that can be a little finicky and are harder to accomplish with the blunt tip and the serrations. On the other hand, it accomplishes some tasks better than a plain edge blade would because of the serrations. If a Spirit X costs 40 euros more, I would suggest what others have said: getting a standalone knife or SAK rather than paying extra money for the X - that way you can choose between them.

No real issues for me, other than having no real tip for poking about with - I find the awl works almost as well.  Having the plain edge section near the handle is good for detail and fine cuts like sharpening pencils.  The serrations are easy to sharpen with the Victorinox Pocket sharpener.  I usually have a Rambler on my keys too so have the scale tools, a small blade and fine scissors available to me.

I like the regular serrated blade also, maybe it didn't sound like it in my earlier post? I think it's slightly more versatile with just a couple of drawbacks. The tradeoff works fine for my purposes 99% of the time, as I prefer the 93 or 111mm blade for food prep anyway.

I love the butter blade on my Spirit - I wish Vic would incorporate it in some of their 91mm models, and if it wasn't such an expensive mod, I'd probably do one myself.

It's great for food prep (especially tomato's) and I use it regularly to slice paper when I'm sizing notices, tickets, posters etc for work.

I have a little ceramic sharpener I repurposed (not sure what it was in a previous life) from a scrap store that works a treat - it's the sharpest blade I own.
Here it is, pictured with some other stuff:

You do need a round sharpener to get into the serrations.

:salute: Thanks, I have a couple of them but either I don't have the angle right or the stroke or something...they get "ok" sharp but not sharp like I want.

On straight edges, I can free hand just about anything to a fine edge and maybe this hampers me. Can't get convex edges done on a strop either...too counter intuitive to the way I learned (so I re-profile them back to straight). :D

The butter knife works. I've found its particularly good at cutting nylon rope and some tougher materials, but would prefer a plain straight edge for most everything else. I've paired mine with a simple 58mm and its working fine for me.
