Old people love wool blankets, and old people also die reasonably often, so you can find this sort of thing relatively easy at the above mentioned sorts of places.

How cynical and true at the same time!

Speaking about blankets while summer is knocking at our door makes me sweat.

firiki, take a look at the material tag too. Many times I've seen a wool blanket advertised but it's actually made from a wool blend unless that's what you wanted.

Heat is bad down there, ask your doctor.

Cold isn't much better, though :D

I think you should grab two sticks and begin knitting. You have the choice of colour, weight and materials at your finger tips. You can felt the wool too.

I could ask my grandmothers to show me. One is senile at age 98 now but I bet she can still handle it. The other one lives in a village and has worn herself out working there most of her life, I wouldn't want to ask her to bring the ol' loom out if I went to visit. Thus, the search continues  :salute:

...

I've recommended it before, and I'll do it again - Second hand shops, Garage Sales, and the like are your friends.

I'm afraid second hand culture isn't quite widespread around here. There are several places selling old and used stuff but I doubt I'd find a good blanket there. Might be worth a try, sure, if only I had the time to go looking :)

[...] Speaking about blankets while summer is knocking at our door makes me sweat.

I'm sure you know there are places in our beautiful countryside where you need a good blanket at night even in July (in July!). Another reason for buying now is so that I can air the blanket and wash it in case it comes all pugnent because of moth repellent.  ;)

firiki, take a look at the material tag too. Many times I've seen a wool blanket advertised but it's actually made from a wool blend unless that's what you wanted.

Thanks for pointing that out, hieya  It's true, most blankets seem to be made from some sort of blend nowadays. Judging by clothing, a 80% wool - 20% polyester should be good. Still, I prefer as much wool in there as I can get.

I get a feeling that people think I'm looking for a blanket to be used on a bed  I'm looking for a slim, woolen one to be tucked away in a bag, though. I think I'll try the Italian one; I'll start by sending the seller a question regarding its composition. Stay tuned.

I've been on 40 Celsius at 12:00 in Kalambaka and 3-4 Celsius at 4:00 in the summit of Helmos mountain the same day. I know what you mean.

That must have been quite a long trip  :o

Yup, it gets cold up in the mountains. A few years back at Pelion, first days of August, we left sea level at 32 Celsius (and rising since it was around 11am) and it was 21 degrees in the forest near Chania around an hour and a half later. Quite impressive (and a pleasant change, too!).

Oh my! Did I say Kalambaka? No, I meant Kalavryta. It was 17km away but 1500m upwards.

No need to bother the relatives. Knitting a blanket is easier than you think. You are just making little knots.....thousands of little knots.....but you get to do it with sticks!

Don't count out yard sales or second hand stores. I got this  Hudson's bay 4point at a yard sale for $5.

No yard sales around these parts, I'm afraid.  :-\

Finding a Hudson's bay blanket or something of similar quality in a second hand store here (let alone at that price) would probably be the equivalent of winning the 100 million $ jack-pot with a ticket I found on the street :D

About the same here. I used to sleep with a window slightly open at all times unless it was raining. Now the wife won't have that and sometimes I feel I'm sleeping in a sauna.  :-[ Thankfully, these past few days she's realised it was time we cracked the windows open a bit!

I still enjoy my tea hot in the morning, though  >:D

You're serious about me going all DIY with this blanket, aren't you? I'm not against knitting, it is a very useful skill and I'll bet it can be relaxing as well. The only problem I see is that knitting probably wouldn't result in the kind of blanket I'm after  ;)

Perhaps you could you provide a link to some pattern?

Can you buy the material, and with a bit of seaming and edging have yourself something just the size you need?

I did check out some overcoat garments and found one that seems like it could do the job. With rough and optimistic calculations, though, the cost for just one blanket made this way would be about equal to that of three of the italian ones (that I'm still waiting for the seller to inform me on their composition...)  :-\

Greek Army Blanket, gray with graphite band and yellow date, is a classic. I was sleeping on one dated 1936 and another med had a 1917.

We use around the house my baby blanket, an αριSτον pure virgin wool. I remember as one of my first memories, it should be made in the mid 60s and still going strong. It is a red tartan pattern and colors are still vivid. My wife loves it too.
I found an old ad of it, it is the same but mine is Clan Stuart like.
(Image removed from quote.)

Um...the lady in the advert seems like she'd do a fine job helping keep warm...Just sayin

Hard to beat the HBC blanket, prized by early traders in Canada.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hudson's_Bay_point_blanket

Still available too.

Def

One of my favorite books, " How to Stay Alive in the Woods" by Brad Angier, and illustrated by his wife if I am not mistaken, frequently references purchasing various supplies at Hudson's Bay Company.

I almost fell over when I followed Grants link and found out that the sister company here in the US is Lord and Taylor. What the deuce?!
