Where did all this Flashlights come from?
on: May 14, 2016, 09:52:41 PM
I very rarely need a flashlight, so I have no idea why I suddenly have that many :P

Small ones

From left to right
Tec Accessories Pixel 25 Lumen -Great flashlight, rests in my small survival kit.
LED Lenser K1 17 Lumen - The quality on this one is questionable, so I would not recommend to anyone.
JETBeam Mini-1 130 Lumen - Tiny USB-chargeable, despite its small size it is quite heavy (much heavier than Olight i3E EOS). Got a nice reflector and beam.
NiteCore Tube 45 Lumen - Cheapest of the group. I don't like it much, but the absence of a reflector gives it a very short reach.
MecArmy SGN3 160 Lumen - Has a red and UV emitter. Nice beam and long run-time. My favorite of them all.

It's a nice little line-up mate.  I really like the look of the Mini-1, I might just have to see how much that one costs.

Medium size

AAA Batteries
Olight i3E EOS - Nice and small
Cheapo - not bad
Maglite Solitair LED - not shown, that one is currently in the Neatherlands with Regina. My favorite of the AAA once as it is the only one with a sensible switch.

CR123 Batteries
Olight S1 - Nice size but never gets carried as I prefer the S10R
Olight S10R - By far my favorite flashlight. Nice size, thanks to the charging dock easy to maintain, love the clip and the magnetic tailstand.
LedLenser F1 - Too big and lacks a firefly mode

Large Size

SRT7 - Greatest of my large collection. Love the magnetic ring and the color modes, great reflector, great beam.
SRT5 - Pretty nice too, the color ones do not have a great beam.
Thrustfire something cheap - Never really used this one.
BC30 - Great bikelight, I will review that one in more detail, hopefully this weekend.

Exotic

Old Swiss Military Flashlight: Takes two D batteries. This baby got it all, firefly mode, red and green light, what can you ask more for.
Victorinox: Why again is this still in its packaging

As long as you know what you have you do not have too many.

I think the era of the AAA battery is over, time to make room for re-chargeable flashlights. This one is really nice with two modes 130 / 9 Lumens. And if you want you still can bring spare batteries.

I suspect it's certainly an area where we're going to see a lot of innovation.  I do think though that for a lot of people they will want to stick with the AAA due to it's availability.

You've got the McArmy and the Tube, might want to add the Fenix UC01.

I suspect it's certainly an area where we're going to see a lot of innovation.  I do think though that for a lot of people they will want to stick with the AAA due to it's availability.
Availability:
With the increase of re-chargeable products, availability of batteries will decline (not overall but places like kiosks will stop having them).
On the other hand we will see an increase of charging ports (In Switzerland trains get more and more power outlets, modern trains have one for two seats or even one per seat).

Capacity:
Li-re-chargeable batteries can also store a whole lot more energy than traditional batteries and unlike previous generations of re-chargeable batteries they don't loose charge anymore.

Politics & Price:
Batteries are wasteful even when recycled. I would not be surprised if non-rechargeable batteries get banned or at least taxed.

That said with improved electronics, we might see more flashlights that can take different batteries e.g. AAA-alkaline and Li-10440. That way you get the best of both worlds (Zebralight used to have the SC80 which was CR123/AA and when I wrote them a message they said they were working on a successor).

That must be fairly new?

I'm actually not that big a fan of the Tube and the UC01 looks like another tube, sorry. I prefer the MecArmy one because it has a reflector and already at two meters that makes a huge difference.

The Fenix UC01 is a new one on me too.

I'm actually just as curious as to what this keyring tool is.

Nice catch WWW. :salute:  From your link I'd guess we're looking at the Real Steel U31.  At first glance they look pretty good to me. :)

Scales look different, reminds me a bit of the Böker CT / Sanrenmu... Could this be the Sanrenmu version?

Whichever version, they do definitely have a Boker Tech Tool vibe.
