I dissolved my SAK!
on: September 13, 2008, 04:49:50 PM
I was cleaning my SAK with some rubbing alcohol and some of it got on the red plastic scales. As I wiped the alcohol off, the paper towel got streaked with red.  Rubbing alcohol will eat away at the plastic scales a wee bit.  Not sure if the same thing will happen with mineral spirits.

Yep, rubbing alcohol (and the hardcore variety propan-2-ol), any acetone, lighter fluid and many other petroleum based fluids will munch through your SAK scales :(

Best to stick with warm (not hot) water and soap really.  If you need to use a SAK in environments where it could come into contact with chemicals its best to go with a nylon scaled SAK or even better alox.

I'm not taking any more mod orders at present, sorry.

The damage was not that bad; just some slight whitish hazing. To fix that, I wiped on some rubbing alcohol to re-soften the scales. The I buffed the scales with a paper towel which smoothed them out.

I have a Sportsman II with the economy scales...I like them a lot better than the "higher grade" cellidor...the ecos are much more tactile.

I use fun solvents all the time, but my squatter (eco scales) seems to have held up well.

I still wouldn't turn up to a party with less than Cellidor or Alox Scales

(I can't wait to get my Stainless scales redone with cutout for the corkscrew on my Waiter)

FYI, nail polish remover is acetone based.  Acetone EATS plastic and fiberglass

Keep any acetone based products away from plastic , fiberglass, micarta, and any other polymers.

I would recommend the carbon fibre scales that Rotokid sells. They need a bit of working as they come in pretty rough-cut slabs, but if you fancy a bit of manageable modding - it is very satisfying.

I used to come here a lot.
