Need some help, looking to get a new sak,,
on: August 11, 2016, 06:52:54 PM
Ok, I'm looking at two diff sak's and I just don't know which one to get? Which two, either the evo16 or pioneer-x, but why such a tough choice, here's the reasons why..

Pioneer-x,
Alox,
Large, 93mm,
Got the scissors,
Awl,
And the rest normal..

Downers
supposedly the problem with the scissors and less tools,

Evo16,
Nail file,
Philips,
Awl,
Serrated scissors,
Toothpick, tweezers,
And the rest normal,

Downers,
It's smaller and plastic funky grip..

So which ones the better choise? The one is nearly a tool for tool as to my custom made alox sak, but is plastic and smaller, and the other is a alox with scissors(better then the farmer that I've been carrying most of the time) but lack of other tools and not to great of a review on the scissors? It's just no matter which way I look at it the one is better then the other, so I'm stumped?

That's a tough one MP.  I love the Evo's, but those Pioneers sure seem like awesome knives.  Sounds like getting both and doing a comparison thread is the answer!!

Your custom alox beats the PX for sure. Form wise and function wise. And an awesome mod it is...

Any particular reason why you need a new SAK?

I personally don't own a delemont series since they are more pricier.. No price justification for me. Would rather spend it on a similar priced 91mm. Blade spine is also a little thin compared to 84mm, or so I was told.

MP....made the decision last night to "retire" the small Master Craftsman that I carry everyday and only carry it occasionally.  If I break something on that one....not like I can just go out and pick up another.

Replaced the EDC with the Vic EVO S18.....I find it very comfortable in the pocket and the locking blade and locking screwdriver a huge plus.  Don't know how many times I've folded up a screwdriver on one of these.  It's also nice and light.

If I could get Vic to stick a metal saw in between the WS and scissors I would be in heaven.....just an EVO Master Craftsman....

I've owned both. I gave away the Evo and kept the X. I prefer the feel of the Alox over the Delemont scales. I also don't like the scissors on the Evo.

Pioneer X all the way,  if I'm right the blade is a tight longer and bigger and it looks great.  The other one feels a bit too sporty and not classy at all IMO

I say EvoGrip 16.
  • You get the serrated scissors, which can be pretty nice for certain materials.
  • You get T&T.
  • It's lighter than the Pioneer X.
  • The scales aren't as tough as alox, but the grippiness does help a little in some situations.
  • It's more different from your custom.
:climber:
May it be as the Pattern has chosen.

Best advice I can give you is get the one you want, not what we want or you'll be buying both plus backups in several colors!  :2tu:  :D

I consider myself a VICTORINOX guy too
Then again , I personally would get a Trail Guide before I would get either the X or EVO.  :D

Tough one buddy
I have an Evo16 actually, so I'd go with the Pioneer-X, but I know that doesn't make your choice easier.  I'd still probably go for the P-X though.

I vote for the PX. And as for your downsides, there really is no issue with the scissors, getting used to the nail nick on the other side is easy. Standard Vic scissors are by far the best available. The minimalist tool load is perfect. I use all the tools frequently with no carrying occasional-use extras. The PX is also alox, which means heavy duty and dishwasher safe. Mine goes from work to kitchen to recreation and back with no issues at all, it's very versatile. And it's alox, did I mention that?  :P

So what do I suggest? Both!  :D

Obviously, the answer is both :)  In an effort to be a bit more helpful, I'd say get both eventually but start with the Evo.

I have both, and they're probably my two most carried SAKs.  Have the Evo in my pocket at the moment actually.  It seems like you know what to expect with the PX (going to be a lot like your custom), but you might find that the Evo frame wins you over.

And if for some reason you don't like it, you can sell it on here and pick up the PX down the road.  Or just keep both like I did :tu:

Evogrip vote here, but I've been carrying an Evo for the past 3 weeks and have really grown to love it!  There was a time when I wouldn't have touched one, but now I find it's part of my EDC more often than not.
