Multi-tool of the year?
on: September 15, 2008, 09:58:59 AM
This question is for any of the mods that may be able to make it happen. But if youd be so kind as to read this through Def...

SOSAK.com has yearly SAKs of the year. They choose a model, and they have a huge group buy pending the amount of people that want to buy the SAKs.

Is there any possibility that we could do something similar with multi-tools, depending on wether we can get enough people to buy them? Maybe even stack up the money all year that they would need to buy next year's MTOTY because they know that there is gonna be a big group buy with the limited MULTITOOL.ORG logo on it?

I know that there have been Leathermans with colored scales that say MULTITOOL.ORG on them, but I missed out on that and I was just wondering if we could make this MTOTY thing happen?

im in,depending on whats the tool.if its gerber im out for sure, but sog and lm would be cool.

BUT i do feel that we shouldnt limit to charter members, the mainreson to me to have this opinion is simply that if we want some wholesale deal and engavings etc we gotta buy a lot of those to get advanteges.

id go for sog power plier, its not locking so its suitable for uk edc too easily, has quite ok prive and everyone can adjust the tool setup at some point.

or Lm crunch, its odd,not the one you see everyday, and even our members, many of them dont have that either.

Im not a charter member.

I am really just throwing out an idea here.

I love the charge idea  ;) ::), but I dont think that we can do that.

We really need to get more members on board here and get Def to check out this post so he can give input.

I know that there are great things happening to this forum still in the way of fun stuff and changes, so maybe we are jumping the gun a bit here.

But I would still like to get a Multitool.org leatherman-Def...

We have no real plans for an annual tool- we do one on SOSAKOnline, but this is a different site, and so we have a different plan.

We have done more than just the Charges.  In fact, there are quite a few more tools that we will have available, and unlike the SAK of the Year program, where the SAKs are a one off and when they are gone they are gone, we are working on having the Multitool.org tools available any time in a Multitool.org shop.  Here are some of the tools we are looking at currently:

Of course Charter Members will get a better price on any tools we offer, and we'll also stock the store with other goodies like Multitool.org hats, shirts, mugs, keychains and anything else we can come up with.

I kinda got to play devils advocate on this. I dont like it. Why give the companies credit. They do know about Defs site, and some do kick in stuff to give away, but what if the participating companies do not get into the running. Should we ignore them and give buissnesst o some company that really dont care?

That being said I would go for the Swiss tool. I dont have one.

Interesting point there.  In a way if we choose a tool to be our choice for the year that is advertising that they cannot buy even though they may not even care to recognize our existence.  I know this may sound boastful but the people on this site know more about multitools, possibly more than some manufactures know about their own tools and their competition.

From my understanding talking to Grant and Bob there are only 2 companies that activly look at the site. I would not give the names as it is not my site and I would hate to have been mistaken. However I do remember that the board is not visited by all, and i really would not be interested in them. They all know about this place, and whether or not they choose to particapate is none of my buissness either, but they gleen a TON of info from here.

I guess you could say we are market research.

BTW this is not a poke at the companies to send stuff( as some do) but just to show that they watch us but be can also watch you.

There are more than two companies that actively read this forum, but few will admit it (and have been proven by other means!  :D) and there are only a couple that don't know who we are.  Of those two, I'd say only half of one of them is unaware, while the other half is well aware, if that makes any sense.

Sure. Now, can the voting if this was to happen be the companies that activley use this site. I understand why they really dont want to go and register on the forums. They would be swamped by everyone here pumping for info, and stickers!!

That's part of the reason, yes.  The other reason is that they want honest feedback here, and if they were to participate that could skew results.  Multitool.org members are polite to eachother, no matter what, and a positive bunch when dealing with each other, but we are also known for telling it like it is, which is something you don't get from a whole boardroom of Yes Men.

If a manufacturer (or representative from) was to become active here, we'd probably have a hard time telling them that their tool was a hunk of crap (Suspension? :D) in such a way as to maintain the type of inter-member decorum we're famous for!
