Trekker or Ranger 78
« on: February 19, 2021, 11:42:47 PM »
Hi everyone. Making my first post here. I'm looking for a new edc pocket knife/woods carry knife. The Rangergrip 78 and the Trekker have caught my eye. They seem pretty much the same except for the grips. Any differences I'm missing? Are they roughly the same size?

The Rangergrip is a 130mm model, while the Trekker is 111mm

That’s 5.1 inches versus 4.4 inches.

The 130mm does have a longer blade. The openers on the Trekker are beefier, especially the bottle opener/large flat head.

The difference in size is significant - 19mm is quite significant when it comes to SAKs.  When 84 vs. 91 vs 93 mm is noticeable...  a 130mm feels very different in the hand when compared to a 111mm.

On the other hand... the sharpened blade length on the 111mm vs the 130mm is almost exactly the same.... there's more of a reach, which may be a good thing for your knuckles, or of no consequence.

The blade shape is different - the Trekker doesn't come to a sharp point, and the Ranger does.  Each style has is advantages, not having a sharp point isn't a problem at awl since you have an awl.

I might have both and can take some side by side photos.
*Edit: Pictures coming.  I like the saw of the Rangergrip, I also like that you push the shield on the Rangergrip to unlock the main blade.

Ranger can be closed single handedly.
The Trekker only if you're left handed. :tu:

I did make a video about this a loong while ago, but closing the OHO Trekker is not difficult with the right hand, just need a little practice:

Great video :tu:
I personally prefer to close my blade without having my fingers in the path in any part of the closing operation though :D

The locking mechanism on the screwdrivers is different -

Trekker - liner lock
Ranger - pressure lock (with automatic disengagement when the pressure is released)

Recently I bought this Ranger Black Onyx. It's not an OHO, but to me that's no problem because I don't like OHO's very much.

Is this special knife worth almost twice the money? That's a question hard to answer. I bought this one only for collecting, but if I would need a 'tactical' survival knife, I would choose this one, despite the high price.
It's just a beast of a knife! Unobtrusive, sturdy, nice and well made. And I like the black coating!
