Must update or add a page on the Multitool.org Multitool Encyclopedia Carry an orange item and post a picture of it everyday for 30 days. Start a thread with a photo of at least ten OPT's in your collection Participate in a challenge by carrying  a Leatherman Pulse or ST200 and post a photo of it  for thirty (30) consecutive days. Start a new thread and post a photo of the Leatherman MiniTool for thirty (30) consecutive days. In this challenge,  carry one(1) Pliers-based or Non-pliers multitool that we always have prejudice against, hate or even fear and post a picture everyday for 30 days Using EDC items randomly selected with a poker hand, post a photo of your EDC or a component of the EDC that got used during the course of the day for 4 weeks (or 30 consecutive days) In the spirit of the Batman utility belt. No surprise that this was the first proper SAK I purchased myself, for myself, with money I earned myself... Go big, or go home, and this was the biggest my salary could achieve at the time!

Mine is several years old, now and a bit banged up. It doesn't show in the photos so much, though!

My first SAK was an early 80's Ranger. I still have it. My dad bought it in west Germany while he was stationed there in the really early 80's.

Any thing to be able to date it exactly?

More and very detailed pictures would help me.

Top and bottom pics with all tools closed would be good too. Ends of the knife sometimes help if the details can be in focus.

Detailed close ups of the tang stamps and both sides of all the tools if you can do that too.

The Ranger is my companion today, but, honestly, it’s one of my oldest SAKs and I think it’s going to retire.

Most times I carry it, I could have just brought the Swiss Champ, Cybertool or even Work Champ instead. Otherwise, something a little smaller is normally more than enough.

Hello!

Two weeks ago I bought myself a used Ranger. As a fan of the Climber, I wanted to see how a 5 layer knife feels and functions. After receiving it and inspecting it's tools state I can say that it has the fine screwdriver bent at the tip, metal file is rusty on the exterior edge and on the surface, liners are slightly bent (I imagine from the torque put on the screwdriver), and this is visible also at the scales level, as they have a hint of lift relative to the edge liners. The scales have no provision for tweezers and toothpick, screwed scissors, and etched main blade with the initials "IMS". It has no hook and no chisel, and 4 turn grooved corkscrew. I cleaned it, but I cannot remove the rust on the metal file. Can someone suggest something I should try? Please pardon my English, as it's not my native language :D

Suffice to say, I grew fond of it, but the idea that it's a mid 80's SAK, doesn't let me put it on hard tasks :D. After all, it's a bit older than me :)

Some of the rust may clean off the file.  I would soak it with penetrating oil.  WD40 would be fine.  And then use a stainless steel brush to see if you can clean it up a little.  Looks like a good knife.  As long as the tools open and close okay, don't worry about the bent liners.  They are hard to fix.  Lots of small screwdrivers on these things get bent a little.  I would leave that alone.  It seems like you can never make it look right if you try to straighten it.  Best wishes.  Gary

I use a brass brush to clean up rust on files.  It might not always take all of it off but it definitely improves it.

This is my test mule Ranger.  I use it to test out 3D printed scales.

Thank you for the advice! I'll try your solutions for the file cleaning. You are right Gary, better let it as is, as far as the liners. The tools do not touch the liners, but are very close.

There are thicker models with more tools and thinner models with less tools – but Ranger is exactly »the right one«, thin enough to go in the pocket and big eaugh to have all the important tools I use on daily basis. When I carry four layers SAK, there is always something missing 😊
I have 4 Rangers, all with customized scales:

-   Rad scales (from an older knife, they are not hollow) and new silver bolsters and shackle,



-   Bone scales and new silver bolsters and brass spacers and shackle (this one is slightly reshaped as homage to beautiful Böker Sportknife),



-   Scales from new silver and



-   Scales from melamine with brass bolsters.







Only five layers configuration that suits me better: layer with another big blade and Reamer/Awl from 93 mm knife instead of metal file layer. One big blade and pen blade I keep always sharp as possible, the other big blade is for rough use. 93 mm Reamer is one of the best Victorinox tools. Ans tip od wood saw is reshaped and can be used as nail cleaner. Knife on the pic has solid stainless handles and stainless pins.
