Sooooo, whats the consensus on the XL? Is it useable? Or the equivalent of the xavt? Love my workchamp. I even pocket carry it at times

Here is one of my WC's in a dual pouch SOS kit fitted with some cool survival items.

As long as I was photographing my SwissChamp with Mr Verne, I thought I'd do the same with the WorkChamp.

I live in a no-locking-knives around town jurisdiction, though we are allowed up to 10cm which is generous. But I do a lot of long urban walks, and my city Haifa includes the headlands of a 600m (around 2000 ft.) mountain, with forest at the edges, and thickly vegetated wadis in town. Not being able to carry a 111mm meter SAK with a saw isn't always good for me, as I make walking sticks as a hobby, and I am always seeing pruning piles or natural fall in wooded area (can't cut living trees on public land), which I need to trim to carry home. So I took out the locking mechanism from my WorkChamp. Hasn't bothered me a bit. I never held a locking knife before age 60, and I really didn't cut myself any more then, as I do with locking blades now. Which is rare. I'm a down-and-out stroke guy with a knife. Probably cut myself more with liner lock multitool knives when closing them one-handed.

The heft of the WorkChamp is great for me. In fact it feels about the best of the lot of 111mm for sawing. The bigger WorkChamp XL is too much for regular carry, though I am a sucker for just about any big SAK.

I love the pliers, which I do not think of as a pliers so much as a super tweezer, or finger extension. In fact I use the pliers instead of the tweezer on all my SAKs that have them.

Even better, there's no hook on the WorkChamp. I can't open the hooks on most of my knives that have them,, as the split-ring point is in the way--but that's another thread.

What have you done to the knife to remove the lock? Asking because I wanted to modify one Outrider aswell for some holiday trips but dropped it.

Yes, and I thought it was going to be the liner lock version, but I was happy to receive the sliding lock:

What have you done to the knife to remove the lock? Asking because I wanted to modify one Outrider aswell for some holiday trips but dropped it.

I carefully removed the slide lock side scale, with a thin guitar pick.
I then removed the lock guts--all straight forward.
I filled the hole with a few layers of paper cut to the flat dimensions of area, with a few drops of super glue on each layer.
Near the top, I filled in with more super glue until level more or less.
I sanded down the glue until even with the scale.

On my blue-scaled Helmsman, I melted in some blue plastic laundry line near the top, before sealing with super glue.

On my Rucksack, I cut a piece of unglazed ceramic to fit, and sealed it with super glue.

Our laws allow blades up to 10cm, non-locking, no questions asked (unless you are threatening someone). The 111mm Vic line works out well, with the lock removed. As said, I was 60 years old before I even held a locking folder, and I have cut myself far more since buying locking blades. I grew up with a variety of slip-joint pocket knives, up to SwissChamp size. I used the saws and blades quite a bit in making walking sticks. For most uses, the lock is not as critical as many imagine. Heavy or repetitive work, yes, the lock helps. I am not speaking of any "survival" or "tactical" uses of course.

Test the spring before removing the lock! Some models have weak backsprings because of the lock. Hold the slide button in the disengage position, and open and close the blade to check.

For some models, like the WorkChamp, I have both the now-deactivated slide lock, and the new liner lock model. Camping, hiking, home use, etc. the lock is fine. In truth I have never been searched by the police, even with a fixed blade hanging in a sheath from my belt.

If I could, the Work Champ is an excellent tool. Has most of what one needs. The XL on the other hand has a lot of tools which may never get used, like the hoof tool or the gutting blade. As one with an assortment of large SAK's I try to stay with units which have some daily use, and not just excess tools which make the thing "larger" -- but add to it's usefulness.

Personally the Work Champ XL is just a bridge too far, in my opinion, YMMV.....// AND yes I have a Work Champ in my arsenal of SAK's.

The Aerojet
The early bird may get the worm, but it is second mouse which gets the CHEESE !!

The only easy day was yesterday.

+1 on that XL is waaaay more than I’d need on a daily basis. Regular Work Champ seems to be a perfect EDC friend for me so far
