Fishy SAKs
on: August 21, 2016, 04:13:00 PM
I don't know about you guys, but I have never ever needed a fish scaler/hook disgorger on my SAK, although I did a lot of fishing. What I did need were both a pair of scissors and a pair of pliers. The Angler and the Fisherman don't have both, that's why I refurbished my Handyman with fishy scales.
The thingy on the lower right is a fisherman's tool called "Walton's thumb", named after Izaak Walton, writer of "The compleat angler" (1653). It is between 20 and 30 years old, I don't know exactly. It is a Hank Roberts design, manufactured in Japan, and was sold in the USA by Orvis.

Apparently the "Walton's thumb" is still available , see http://www.waltonsthumb.com/ Some good pics there too.

It no longer bears Hank's initials, though.

The Fisherman is one of my very favourites because of that detail on the otherwise super-boring red scales. And the scaler is the handiest back-scratcher ever invented....
