Hi Team,

Just so that you all know - Our friend and colleague Whoey - Is our tech support for the Wiki (and MTo)
- He is the one who fixes these types of problems, does db re-orgs, upgrades etc etc - Basically nothing works without him, and we are indebted to him.

Hi Yanassauro and everyone,
Thanks for your concerns, and thanks, and offers of help.

As you may know:
SAKWiki and MTo is privately owned and funded (not like FB!) - We have quarterly server fees which we have to pay.
We rely on donations from generous users to keep going - and we are always short of funds.

So you all can definitely help.....
There is a donation panel on the side of the SAKWiki, and MTo screens, and if you would like to contribute to keep SAKWiki and MTo alive please feel free to donate. Every donation helps no matter how small.

If every active user donated one dollar per month - We would cover our running costs.
Unfortunately it's just a core team of about a dozen MTo members, who donate every month to keep us going.
For instance this month we are at about $130 against a $300 target - to cover our fees.

As for SAKWiki - It gets 50,000 hits per day and is acknowledged as the defacto source of information about Swiss Army Knives - Yet pretty much no-one donates!!        :(   -  I think people might think that everything is for free - But it ain't!!

 Rant Polite Request  Over !!

If anyone is interested in being a Wiki editor - Pls send me a PM with your 'CV' - ;) - and interests

Thanks all

It's down for me, too: "Tiki installer disabled." Perhaps Huntsman could shed some light on the matter?

Hi Folks

There are a couple of new help and structure pages in the Wiki - Please check them out and give us any comments/feedback

https://www.sakwiki.com/SAKWiki+Structure
https://www.sakwiki.com/tiki-index.php?page=SAKWiki+Help

The first page is linked to the main Wiki page (in the bottom paragraph) and also via the Help button in the main menu.

Thanks

It's looking good.

I just realized that I've never really sat down to "read" the Wiki per say.  I just look up the info I need for a specific size or model but I've never stopped to read everything on it.  Is there a Master Table of Contents that I haven't seen yet for the entirety of the Wiki?

Thanks AC
Yep looking up a specific model is probably the most common use of the Wiki.

The Structure Page attempts to be that master list  ...... https://www.sakwiki.com/SAKWiki+Structure
As it describes all the pages - Which are:
  • The model pages - I hope it tells you how they are organised and how to find and use them  - There are literally hundreds of these!
  • And then the 'other' non-model pages - Which are listed in the table on that page.
  • And then the galleries
  • And that's it !!  .... There is nothing else!!   :o

There is a bit more on the use of the Wiki in the Help Page - eg Finding a model.

Does that work for you?   ???       - Please let me know how/if it can be explained/listed better

PS. I guess the 'master list' is also the menu panels down the right hand side of the browser screen

@ AzteCypher - and the Knights - and everyone else

If you are looking to explore the Wiki beyond just looking up a model - I would definitely recommend the following pages:
Most are described in the new Structure Page - Some might be one level down - eg Blades page is under the Tools page
  • The Tools page
  • The Blades page
  • The Series summary page and individual series pages below - These are very varied, colourful and interesting
  • Maybe the Colours page - Nice section on Vic colour numbering conventions in there
  • The catalogues are pretty interesting ..... especially the older ones
And we have some very good reference pages - Which are described on the Help Page
  • The Tool to Models tables/pages
  • The Models to Tools tables/pages
  • The diagrams and images at the bottom of the Vic alpha list pages (created by our members Max Stone, LeaF and NeleDo)

Hi Folks,

LeaF (Alex) and I were discussing the Bantam and Cadet pages a while ago - and specifically the so called Cadet II and Bantam II pages.

We think there are no such models as the Cadet II and Bantam II !! - I cannot find any references in the catalogues -
These 'models/versions' were actually the original versions of the Cadet and Bantam.
If you check the pre-2000 catalogues - You will see the Bantam and Cadet listed but with the 'Bantam II and Cadet II' tool configurations -
And in the later catalogues you will see the Bantam and Cadet listed with the current tool configurations.
I suspect that the names Bantam II and Cadet II were made up by earlier Wiki editors!  :o

Also the fact that the Cadet II and Bantam II predate the current Cadet and Bantam makes the II suffix very confusing for Wiki users.
Cadet A and Bantam A might have been better!

So the proposal is to remove the Cadet II and Bantam II pages from the Wiki - and to explain the evolution of those models, and incorporate all those details, in the main/current Cadet and Bantam pages' History and Tools sections - And TBH this information is mainly there already.
We will make a note about the Cadet/Bantam II name in those pages to avoid any confusion when curent Wiki users (who may be familiar w the II pages) come back to the Wiki.

PS. This approach (ie explaining the evolution and tool configuration changes of models in the History sections) is used for other models such as the Champion, Craftsman etc

Thoughts?    ???
Is everyone OK w this?

I'd say use the names given by Victorinox. Merging them may make things more consistent with the rest of the Wiki. That would be just fine by me.

Being new here I hope I am not stepping on any toes with this.

I totally agree on the Cadet II not being a good name for the original model.

Cadet, or Kadett as the German word for it is seems originally have been used for a series of knives.

The ones later called Cadet II are the ribbed scales 2233 r(ed)+ and s(ilver)+

So... to dim things up totally - there are a lot of Kadett: s but only some continued to be called that.

I think this is a sound idea.  You account for both accurate, historical data, and anecdotal data.

Assuming J2000E didn't just totally muddy the waters, I think edits for clarification are a good idea.

Stepping on toes?    .......  ???    :tu:    .......   You have just been promoted to Chief Historian and Investigator
Amazing info - I must admit I did not know the Cadet name went back that far ......

And a) Where did those catalogue  images come from please? b) What date (ish) are they?  c) Can I use them in the Wiki?

@ Everybody - Thanks for all the feedback
- We'll update the Cadet/Bantam pages, incorporate J2000's info, and delete the II pages
This will be  a great improvement    :tu: :salute: :D

a/ it is hidden in plain sight at SAKWiki

(pages 14 and 15) at:

b/ I do not know if you all have come to consensus about the different years in that file? Mid to late 60ies for page 14/15? Up to 70?

c/ I guess you can ask SAKWiki...   ;) :D

Happy to have been able to surprise at my "Jr. Member" state/status.
