My SAK and my BIC
on: August 28, 2016, 09:35:28 PM
I'd like to see colourful pictures of SAKs and BICs.
Other firemaking tools are OK but I prefer BICs.

Nice thread, I'll try to keep it rolling!

I carry this "fire kit" on me whenever I'm in the woods:

Bushcrafter mod, petroleum jelly cotton ball capsule, and ferro rod.  Usually though, I use these instead for actually starting a fire, because, well, it's easier that way.

And disregarding the colorful request (sorry), a more typical edc carry (the white ones are easier to check the level on).

Yep! Well..

The only things that separate us and chimps and crows from other animals is tools. And then fire yeah pretty much just humans and dragons on that one.

I saw this experiment where a crow (or was it a raven?) Used a stick to unlock a cage as part of a multi step puzzle to unlock a food reward. But good luck opening a sak without thumbs, bird. Aside from the One Winged Trekker. Also seen chimps use twigs to dig grubs out of logs. Simple fixed-stick twigs though with a single implement. There's another use for the fish scaler right there...grub digger outer.

I use a Bic to melt my paracord ends. I use the can opener to remove the child safety thingy. Hate those things. They dig into my flesh when trying to light it. Anyone outside USA probably hasn't had to deal with that.

Otherwise, they're probably bad for the environment being disposable and plastic,  but no other brand of disposable comes close. No flame adjustment needed. I like both sizes.

Full size Bics are really hard to find here in the UK.  I found these left-over Brazil World Cup ones in a branch of Clas Ohlson and bought a few.

Nope, that's the only kind of BIC lighters we've had here for years.

I like how they removed the flame adjuster: it makes the thing last longer and provides a stable flame so you know what to expect every time. :tu:

It is... everywhere else has them, why not here?  Sometimes you find the mini-bics but almost never the full size ones.  The Swedish homeware store Clas Ohlson is the only store I've seen them in, and not always there.  Even on UK ebay there is only 1 seller with them, presumably imported from elsewhere.

Stayglow Deluxe Tinker and a 21 year old lighter. Would look cooler if the lizard sticker wasn't worn out, it kind of matched that paracord.

Yes the pens, disposable razors etc are everywhere.  Even the other Bic lighter styles - they're not the most common but you do see them in shops.  But not the full size ones.  Maybe they can't compete against the Clipper lighters that are very common here.  The Clippers are similarly priced and are refillable.  But Clipper are a Spanish firm and sell all over Europe, so it still doesn't really explain why Maxi Bics are common in other European countries but not the UK.

You know what, I'm going to email Bic through their web site and ask them  :)
