Well I made this today...
on: September 13, 2016, 02:04:46 PM
First thread so please don't mind the rambling.
So it is sort of a leather strop/block thing. I don't know if you can purchase such tool?
Just an idea I had today while not doing a lot at work.
Thought I would make something for the fun of it and not buy something else my wife would kill me for if she saw another package turn up in the mail hehe.
I kind of pinched the idea from the 'leather hone' (I think they are called) you can purchase for sharpening systems. I'm not sure which side of the glove would be best to use so hence the double sides.
Pretty new to all this stuff so I am kind of winging it.
Haven't even tried it really so don't know if it will work much if at all. My experience is a couple of YouTube videos and some light reading on here about sharpening.
This cost me zero which is a bonus. The tool consists of:
A spare leather work glove
Scrap timber out of the trailer at work
4 nails and a shoelace from an old pair of work boots that are now in the bin.
The finishes are pretty rough but i don't really mind especially if it ends up in the bin with the old work boots. I would like to cut and fold some brass caps to go on the end or something I think would look nice but that's beyond me. I think I'll just stick to my 4 nails and my lanyard that took me an hour and a half to tie that one knot right.
If it does my small blades justice it might find itself a permanent spot in work backpack.
If anyone has any criticism, tips or ideas that would be neat.

Tom

Nice job! Are the nail heads low enough so they don't come into contact with the edge or you just running the edge in between the nail heads?

You have a good idea there but I would keep the nails or tacks on the back side. I would not use end caps either, you don"t want to hit metal when using it as a strop.

Great idea for a used glove! Would Staples take up less space and be recessed more?

Great job!

Winging something you are new at is a great way to learn- frankly I have always considered knowing what you were doing to be a serious impediment to actually getting something done!

Looks great, I can't wait to hear how it works!

Nice job.
Flesh side is the one you want.
Can use shoe glue or contact cement glue to stick it on the wood. Will never come off. Will save the blade from any scratches.

I :like: it and if the blade clears the nails then you indeed have a winner there

Unfortunately the blade does contact the nail heads. But I don't mind. I'll attempt another one I think with a few refinements now knowing which side of the leather to use and maybe use liquid nails or something similar. Maybe even lay two or three layers of leather to create some 'give' during the honing process because the leather glove is quite thin.
But she sure does work and I'll hang on it to and use daily until I replace it with 2.0.
The new one will definitely have a lanyard though. Makes it super easy to hold while using it.
Anyways, will post photos of 2.0 and maybe give it a name.

You could always try to countersink the nails somewhat. I would also add Jewelers rouge to the one leather side.
A little Leatherman information.
