How many times has your SAK saved your bacon?
on: September 20, 2016, 07:20:55 PM
We all love our SAK's and they are handy. Those little repair jobs, day to day cutting and opening. But, how many of you have had a SAK really save the day for you? Really save the bacon as they say. Like being out on a motor scooter and have it die in the middle of nowhere on some dirt road. Or being at the other end of a ling and winding lake and have the trolling motor come apart and be looking at a very long paddle back against the wind?

I was thinking about the times that having just a screw driver was a great thing. The ability to get 'into' something to mess with it, and maybe even using a paper clip or a bit of duct tape to get a temporary fix to get home. But you had to get 'into it' to do the makeshift fix.
Don't get too serious, just enough will do.

I've had a SAK ruin my evening once. There was this pretty girl in a dancing who accidentally got some chewing gum in her hair. She knew from a friend of mine that I was carrying a SAK and asked me to cut it out. Being a nice guy I said I would and produced my Wenger Hunter. She ran and I never saw her again.

I used my OH Soldier to cut a slab of bacon in half, so the slices could fit easier into the smaller skillet, on a campout.  :D

Nothing worse than being on a roof top when Doh,  you need a driver or file.  Glad I've always had my Swisschamp on me and now more recently my Champion.  Having to climb back down would be a bother and waste of time.

After a heater core hose on my HMMWV blew out in the middle of the desert, my Huntsman came to the rescue.  I used it to unscrew the hose clamps, wrapped the hose with duct tape, and reattached the hose clamps. The repair was still holding six months later.

Yes, over 40+ years.  The most frequent is picking the front screen door when it slam locks....seems to happen every couple of weeks which is why I never leave the house without a 84mm/91mm/93mm SAK!

I remember one time at a family event, I was trapped in a public toilet. The slot lock could not be opened. Very hard to slide it open even with pliers. So I just use the phillip screwdriver and dismantle that door lock. Thanx to the Spirit.

Btw I love bacon

It's great bacon. The only problem is the price $15 to $20 a can. But it's probably the best canned meat you can buy.

There are more times, in the 32 years I've carried SAKs, than I can count that it's gotten me out of a jam.  Probably the one that sticks in my mind is being stuck out in the middle of nowhere with my trusty aircooled VW a long time ago, and using my Huntsman to engineer an ignition bypass so that I could get it started when the original ignition switch finally gave up the ghost.  It's amazing the number of tools you can make out of the limited number on a Huntsman to get you home!!  Now that I've a Swiss Champ and a Craftsman I could probably just rebuild the whole works right there!!

The only time I can recall my SAK saving the day, was when my roommate had locked his keys in his pickup.  He climbed into the camper top and pried open the sliding glass window with my 111mm Adventurer,  then I had to squeeze thru since I was the skinnier one, to reach the keys hanging in the ignition.

Great story!  When we were traveling Europe back in '80, one of my buddies fixed his mom's VW Bug in a similar way using his Explorer and we were off to Bravaria for the weekend.

I have often used SA TOOLS to reinstall the rebound slide spring on SNW Revolvers when the proper specially made tool had fallen into the "diminsional vortex" to be seen at a later date.

They are IMPOSSIBLE to install by hand, if you try this, you need fingernails of brass, maybe adamantium,

Used my pioneer to get into my house after a doorknob in my mudroom broke. Was able to unscrew the plate and use one of the blades to force the mechanism to turn.

Very L-o-n-g reply . . .

This very old Woodsman, from circa 1977 or 1978 saved my ass more times over a couple decades than I could begin to recount. Using it was second nature. To be fair, I also carried the venerated Buck 110 and a M7 bayonet. The Buck's big blade could handle some things the large spear point blade on the Woodsman was too small for, but that wasn't often. The M7? It came in handy a couple times I'd rather not remember. Once in a lifetime experiences that one prays afterward will only be experienced once in one's lifetime.

At one point I had command of a unit that was completely dispersed in small teams on very widely scattered sites when we were deployed into an extended operation. I and my senior NCO coordinated, split up and rotated going from site to site. This was just before MREs were deployed and I lived on C-rations by the case, each of which had 12 meals and would be good for four days "on the road". One time I left to "ride circuit" after grabbing another case of C's that had all the meals but had already had half the top opened. I soon discovered why. Whoever did that had absconded with all four of the P-38s that had been hot glued to the bottom of the case. The meals themselves were untouched (I had verified that after discovering the top half open). I knew then how to bushcraft my way into a can using a smooth igneous rock, but that takes precious time and makes noise. The can opener on the Woodsman was a godsend in the absence of a P-38, and I can still open a can with either just about as fast as common geared wheel cutter kitchen can opener. Want to heat the main course instead of eating it cold? Punch a small hole in the top and put it on the exhaust manifold of a running jeep, Hummer or power generator engine for five minutes (forget to punch the hole and it will make a BIG mess).

Probably could have made do with an Explorer, but there were a couple times I was glad to have the wood saw as a matter of convenience. Most used tools (aside from the large and small blades) were the in-line Phillips, large flat-tip on the cap lifter, can opener, wire stripper, awl, magnifier and tweezers. For some reason my fingers seemed to collect wood splinters and tiny pieces of fine gauge steel wire like splinters from handling steel cable occasionally. Being able to use the magnifier and tweezers was much more preferable to using the wood saw to amputate a finger after a severe infection set in.

If anyone wonders why I come up with some of the things I do that can be done with a SAK, I had two decades of practice. I fixed more electrical and electronic gear by connecting cables that were either not connected or not connected completely/properly. How did I see behind stuff to see if stuff was cabled together properly? Sometimes I had my old Boy Scout metal mirror, but that wasn't often. More likely I had to use a flashlight to illuminate the small space behind the equipment and the polished spear point blade on the Woodsman as a mirror. I'd rather have had the substantially larger BSA mirror, but when the Woodsman's polished blade is all you have, it's what you use.

There was a time when a Tinker and a  6 inch crescent wrench were literally like only tools. While it wasn't a life saver, those two helped build a couple cheap computer desks in our rental at the time.
