Retro Gaming
on: September 30, 2016, 02:23:23 AM
in an age where our processing power is so great that games are amazingly immersive, I prefer the old 8-bit and 16-bit era.
I am a fan of cartridge systems, and was a collector of such systems.  (seemed to have lost several systems in a move 15 years ago)

if anyone has any old systems that they would be interested in trading for MTs or SAKs (or possible selling)  let me know.

I miss my old Super Nintendo, Nintendo Entertainment System, even the N64 and Original playstation.
If I can help, let me know

I'm with you on playing the old stuff. I bought a SNES off MadPlumbarian (if I remember correctly) a while back after finding my original SNES and not wanting to play that one since it still has the box and all paperwork. Those old games are just as fun if not more fun due to the nostalgia and such.

I would not be interested in getting rid of either of those SNES's. I believe I have a N64 and a Original Playstation. I would possibly get rid of either of those. I would have to take a look and locate them first though. I will let you know.  :salute:

I recall wanting the Virtua Boy when it came out.   It was so awesome, right up until I played one.

If I knew where my old NES was it would be all yours.

I think it's pretty cool how we've gotten both hardware emulators and good software emulators for all of the popular systems of old. As for really absurd demonstrations of how much horsepower current systems has over their twenty or thirty years older ancestors, I think https://archive.org/details/internetarcade is very striking. Emulating a full gaming system, in a browser... in a horrible language... No problem!

yeah,  that is insane.  I like the horsepower of new machines, I just like the simpler games.  sometimes the new games seem more focused on game play and less focused on "how real can this look"?

I would love to find a way to play Joust on my tablet.

I go much further back than 8 bit games!

As in https://archive.org/details/arcade_joust ? The 6809 (the engine of the arcade game) was arguably the nicest 8 bit CPU of its era.

I sometimes think of buying a secondary computer with focus on a clean and understandable system. The full HW + OS + application + bells + whistles has grown scarily complex and hugeover the years. (I'm a programmer and I've really learned to hate complicated systems.)

If you want to go jousting pre 8 bits, get a horse and a lance. The Atari 2600 was an 8 bit system.  :D

MOS 6507. A 6502 with fewer address pins, so as 8 bit as a C64 or an Apple II.

you are correct,  I keep thinking about the vast majority of the 4-bit games,  but the system was 8-bit.

I somehow don't feel at all nostalgic about playing on a Timex Sinclair 1000. Just saying.

Im considering to get the NES Classic "for my son" when it arrives :D
I was not allowed to have a TV game machine as a kid, but we got a IBM 286 when I was 8, so I played a lot of Commander Keen, Outrun, Test Drive and Hot Rod.

The Amiga version of Dune 2 was the best. When I switched to PCs way back when the Pentium 100 was king, I was shocked at just how terrible Dune 2 was on the PC.

This was the first game system I had in the house:

The Atari 2600 was a HUGE upgrade for us when it came out!

I recall not getting a Nintendo for a while- because we traveled a lot I actually wanted a Game Boy so o could play games while camping or traveling but my parents decided to get the full blown NES for the same price as a Game Boy so both my brother and I could play.

Which I hated because he is three years older than me and beat me at everything:facepalm:

yup, the NES is getting expensive. I could not see paying $199.99 for a 30 year old system. I will be checking for your stuff tomorrow. Possibly tonight if I don't fall asleep in the next 30 minutes.  :salute:
