Friends kid is going to 6th grade camp in January.

So here in the states kids in grade 6 typically go off to camp.  They stay about a week and have a blast.  They go up to the mountains and do all sort or activities and get fresh air.  Many kids have not been in the local mountains so this is their first experience. 

My friends kid has been on several occasions so he's pretty stoked.  The paper work that came home talked about some activities they will do.  One was bow drill fire making  .  He asked his mom if she could teach him and she was so excited.  He also asked if he could bring his own kit  .  Bet the teacher tripped out on that one.  I'm sure she had no idea his mom was such an outdoors woman. 

I asked him to ask his teacher if he can bring a ferro rod.  We'll see if he can.  Those camp counselors are gonna trip on this kid. 


Are their camps like this around the world for youngsters that are school sponsored?

Yeah down this way school camps are very much a thing.

Yes, you can not walk in the mountains in the summer without tripping on some child.....

Scouts, schools, unions, church, municipalities...., they all have some camp running.

Yeah they are (or were). School camps,Primary School, 2 by the time I was 10, Intermediate, at 11 and 12, Highschool was 2 or 3 as well.

Really looking forward to see one from the parents/adult side too.
