Wood scales with metal liners - epoxy?
on: November 05, 2016, 12:48:39 AM
This question is a little noobish...

About to do my first Wenger based mod...Have the final bits on the way (thanks S.P.)

I was planning on using the flat-style outer liners (not the kind with the 3 little snappy slot thingies) and then purpleheart wood scales with exposed brass pins, sanded down smooth and flat with the scales.

Do I epoxy the wood scales to the outer liners? The pins will hold the wood on, but I'm wondering for assembly ease/strength if the wood should be bonded to the metal outer liners first.

Any tips on how much I should countersink the holes in the wood to leave room for the pins to expand?

if anyone is interested, it's gonna be:

Locking blade/nail file
phillips/wrench
scissors (thinking of trying dual spring for less movement if my local machine shop can thin down a couple of scissor layer spings)
pliers
wood saw
metal file
openers
Corkscrew/awl on back

Final question: Will a Vic corkscrew work with the wenger spring? I want to put a mini driver in there and I see it won't fit in my Wenger corkscrew.

I have a fair bit of experience with wooden scales.
I rarely glue the scales to the liners, but a sparing layer of epoxy works well.

Also I have found that only a very small countersink is needed for the pins, if any, and they still hold tightly.

a series of Vic's I did recently.

Do I remember correctly that these are coated with superglue?

These are finished in marine spar varnish, but I have done some others with polished superglue. It's a lot of work but it looks really nice.
