Buy the SAK and hope for a boxed version to come along later?

I like my SAKs to have original boxes...just a little quirk of mine. :ahhh
But lately I've purchased a couple of knives because I liked them and/or in one case it is somewhat rare, and it didn't come with a box.

I'm thinking I will buy the rare one if it doesn't have a box and then hope for a mint/boxed one to show at some later time.
As a collector do you buy when not in box?  Or do you have a collection idiosyncrasy?  Just curious.

Here's my latest non-boxed SAK.  I hoped for original box, but sometimes they don't come with them:

A box is always nice, but not a requirement. On older knives intended for use boxes seldom show up. Great looking Huntsman by the way.   :tu:

I prefer box or (even better) sealed clamshell, but if it is rare and I've been wanting it then sometimes you have to take what you can get (and be happy you finally found it).

CS, is this a Huntsman possibly?  I ask because the eBay seller called it an Artisan....so I just want to be sure.

If I buy BNIB, I prefer that it comes with the box... Getting 2nd hand ones complete with box is a plus... But seldom is the case...

I would think you buy this one now, and if you come across a boxed version, you could resell this one.  Then until, or if you never find a boxed one, you'll still have that part of the collection filled.

Artisan is the 85mm version of the Fieldmaster (with Phillips). If that's what it is, an outstanding score. I assumed it was the more common 91mm with a cork screw, a Huntsman. (memo to self: Don't assume, ask!)

Thank you all for your replies, I enjoy reading them to get other's perspectives.
CS, here's hoping it is an Artisan.  I mainly bought it because it looks so similar to my Woodsman, but in 84mm.

Hope my co-workers don't ask, "What did you do this weekend?"  I'd have to reply, "I was counting the teeth on my SAK to see which version I had."  :ahhh

Thank you Barry!  I thought it would pair nicely with my Woodsman from a similar era:

Both are very nice.

 :like:

I totally get wanting the original box and such.  I don't have that need as I'm not a focused collector.  Having the item for me is satisfying since my buying is the result of running into stuff at the flea market.

I'm not a very good collector. I like to buy stuff new just because I prefer to put the scuffs on it myself. Boxes quickly get thrown out. There's only a few things which I've kept in boxes. Sometimes I regret not keeping things nice, only using a few easy-to-find pieces, and keeping the rest pristine. But for the most part, the fun is in the carrying. Usually my moments of regret are when I think of selling off stuff, and I would prefer not to do that, so I might as well enjoy using them. :tu:

I totally get that.  Only thing I've run into with Victorinox is that some of the versions I like have been discontinued.  Woodsman is one (luckily a seller on eBay has some new ones from a reissue).  Yeoman is another one that is hard to find new in box/package.

BTW IMHO an original box is nice to have, but it's the knife that's the important bit, I would have had to pass up on this otherwise, as the box was not original (the seller clearly said this, so I was aware):

That is lush OG

For myself, I don't care about the box etc because I use pretty much all my SAK's, and those that don't get some use get given away. About a third of mine are modded and all of them (bar a Huntsman my wife and daughter bought me for Yule last year) are second hand.

I can see why collectors like the box though.
