$20M Somali ransom demand for ship; 1 crewman dies

So the story is Somalian pirates hijacked a Ukrainian ship that's destined for Kenya, and on the ship are 33 Russian T72 tanks and crap load of weapon/ammo/parts that was purchased by Kenyan government. They demand $20 million ransom. A Russian crew member has died of "hypertension".

A U.S. destroyer is keeping an eye on them, and a Russian missile frigate is ordered directly there.

Man these pirates just messed with the wrong people and in some deep doo doo!

I pretty much thought the same thing... that's probably why they are asking for a relatively low amount. They are hoping that 20 million is cheaper than the ammunition that will be used to remove them from the face of the planet. My guess is, they probably don't know the Russians are more interested in making examples than paying ransom!

I would not want to be a pirate right about now...

One thing I can't figure out is why NATO,and whoever else is patrolling that part of the world don't make merchantmen convoy under armed naval escort.

I may be wrong but I recall hearing that something like 30-50 percent of the worlds trade goes through that area. To actually be able to convoy that many boats would be impossible.

That is a good thing. If crewmembers were trained and armed things like that would not happen.

They say that many many many years ago when it became fashionable to kidnap embassy personnel in Lebanon that a Terrorist group snagged a couple of Russians. They made some demands and the russians responded by sending in Spetsnaz and eradicating said terrorists. Not sure if it's tru or not, just rember hearing it somewhere.

I think that they need to send in this man.......

I have heard that story too. I also heard a story about how a group of terrorists hijacked an airliner, and while it was on the tarmac getting refueled, the SPETSNAZ snuck on board and took out all the terrorists inside, without any civilian casualties.

And, I used to watch Vladimir Vasiliev, former trainer and operative for the SPETSNAZ, who now runs a school in Toronto. After seeing that man move, I don't doubt any of it!

Some updates, apparently there was an argument on how to proceed when they found out U.S. and Russian navy are on their butt, and escalated into a gunfight, three got killed, rest went to celebrate some Muslim holiday.
