A Lil HELP Please - smooth Alox Cadet - Repair
on: February 08, 2017, 02:03:14 AM
 :mail:
Just in............ Came with broken spring on openers.

QUESTIONS   :D

1 - What DONOR back spring can be swapped in? (does it have to be a smooth alox cadet only? will any others work? etc, etc, etc  :D :tu: )

2 - What size brass pin stock is needed? - (yes i searched but not much out there on SMOOTH ALOX)  :bnghd:  :D  :tu:

3 - Is there a memeber here who has the parts for sale?

4 - Is there a member here who would be willing to tackle the spring swap, who already has spring and brass pin in there vast parts bins already?

5 - Does anybody know who the Advertised company is : "CJB"  ( I searched online = ZIP/ZIPPO/ZILCH )  :D

I would love to fix or have it fixed and TOTE this thang!  :ahhh :drink:

 I do have the othe half of the spring.... I put the whole knife in the Sonic Cleaner, when done with 2 cycles on level 3 , I rinsed it in the sink, and the damn thing fell down the drain into the "P" Trap....so I will get it out ASAP  :bnghd: :poh:  :D

I think you can use opener backsprings from regular 84mm cellidors...

Pin sizes are the same as well... 2.2mm for all..

You'd of course want a Recruit spring unless you're trying to add an awl on back.

I've never found 2.2mm rod, I make it from 2.5mm.

Ah, right not just 84mm opener springs.. Recruit opener springs...

Cali, think you will still need to reduce the pin diameter a bit... Vic's is actually 2.25mm but 2.2mm will do... I would also start with the back scales... just in case the drill bit decides to move about...

Good luck with your restoration... pics please afterwards...

If desired, you might want to add scissors to it... ah ah ah...

:tu: Thanks again , Jaya
Yes,Sir ... I plan on chucking the rod in a hand drill....... and sanding it down a tad. I will keep checking spring holes for fitment.  :tu:

I am only removeing the center pin for this fix .................. but for future reference  , are the pivot pins a different size?  ???

Taped up knife - Cuz I am a Fumble Fingers  :D

Filed pin flat ( on rear side  :D )

Donor extras removed

Here is where I am at now (pics below) ..................... Gonna center punch pin on alox to drill out, NEXT.

Removing just a pin might be too hard a task... backspring tension comes into play... but it's worth giving a shot...

Pin diameter is the same for all pins...

Should be possible to do it by only removing the middle pin.  You'll need to open up all the tools and use a vice or clamp to compress the springs into position so you can get the replacement pin in.   Peen the one end first before you push it through - you'll get a better finish that way.  Sand or file a nice long taper on the other end of the replacement pin to help it through the holes.

Pics Cont..........................   :D

1 - With all blades open ..... Cadet into Vice ... Compress springs to line up holes in Scales/Liner/Springs.  8)

2 - Used a broken Drill Bit ...Slightly smaller than Brass pin/rod needed ...... To line up holes.  :tu:

3 - Sanded down 3/32" or 2.38mm Brass rod/Pin stock = chucked it into my Drill and held it on a sanding block with sticky back sand paper applied to it.
Once I got it to correct size, I tapped it into the knife,on a anvil with a hole in it ,so the pin on bottom could extend through.  :tu:

4 - Time to nip the ends , with my fancy schmancy Nippers ........  :D

Amazing job!  Thanks for all the pics too!
Quick question, is that painter's tape?  Looks like it might be plus it doesn't leave residue when removing correct?
Rest in peace ColoSwiss, you will always be remembered.
