What's next?
on: February 11, 2017, 05:52:39 AM
I need you fine folks for some input on my first Alox. I always have scissors on my Swisstool Spirit X, so I'm thinking Farmer, or Pioneer. Which one feels better in hand? Other suggestions in the alox line? I prefer the 93mm line FYI. Thanks!

Both Farmer and Spirit X has the wood saw... If it's an overlap, go with the Pioneer... Either Farmer and Pioneer are good models... Can't go wrong with them...

Or howabout the Pioneer X...

I have only one alox SAK at present, the Pioneer X.  I look for scissors as one of my essential tools and after dragging my feet looking at the Pioneer, pulled the trigger on a purchase when I found out about the Pioneer X.  After holding it my hand, I was even more impressed with this purchase.

I don't have a Pioneer X but if I were deciding I'd go with it.  I have a Farmer and Pioneer and both are wonderful.  Hate to say it but you really cannot go wrong here.

That dark grey Pioneer looks like a nice woods walking companion. I looked a lot at the Pioneer X, and since I prefer the scissors on my Spirit X, I think the overlap would be a bit much. Keep the suggestions and experience coming please!

If you're looking for a companion with the Spirit, maybe look at the Electrician, or possibly the Harvester for some blade shape varieties.  While the 2-layer is nicer to pocket carry, I like the feel of the 3-layer in use.

I love the Rancher. The Nasty Talon tool is far more useful to me than yet another tin opener (a tool which I have used perhaps 3 times in my entire life.)
Of course the Rancher is more expensive and doesn't come in fancy colours (or if it does, it's absurdly expensive.)

If you're looking for a companion with the Spirit...

I would say the best companion for the Spirit isn't Alox at all, but a 111mm Forester. The Spirit has a tiny blade & a tiny saw - the Forester improves on both. And it has a corkscrew, which the Spirit is missing (I know there is a corkscrew that you can buy extra but I would lose that in about 10 mins)

Better yet - the Hunter XT which gives you the big saw, blade and a belt cutter, along with the corkscrew, and without a second set of opening tools &awl... no overlap!

Between Farmer and Pioneer i would go for Farmer,  but my suggestion is Harvester. My first and only alox. Best knife for hiking. My next is Pioner X i think.
