Microscope Find.
on: March 28, 2017, 12:40:33 AM
I just got back home with a very interesting find. I took my girlfriend to eat at a local Chinese Restaurant. Next door to this is Value Village. Now I like to look in there every now and then because you just never know what you will find. Today, I got something rather nice. I found a compound microscope for 30 bucks in their special glass case area where all the good stuff resides. I asked if I could try it and the lady told me that it was tested and should be good, but there was no plug in to test it. I examined it and everything looked brand spanking new. I figured for 30 bucks, I couldn't go wrong even if it needed repairs. Brought it home and was pleasantly surprised that the microscope light worked without plugging it in (That is after I plugged it into a wall socket and tried the on/off switch). It dawned on me it was cordless...and the included power pack is to recharge the batteries. Wow...this is quite a nice microscope. When I looked in the eyepiece, everything was beautiful with no dirt or dust in the optics. This is a far cry from the old beat up ones I use at my workplace.

I am puzzled why they would have such a nice microscope in a place like Value Village. Brand spanking new no less!

But for 30 bucks, I feel like a thief.

Trying to dig up some more info on it. It is an older model...came out back in 2003. Apparently a single charge can give me 60 to 75 hours of light time. What I do know, this is a lot better than my old cheap childs microscope that had a swivel mirror on the bottom.

I remember the mirror never worked right for me, once you got the light pointing towards the scope, either the mirror would fall back down, or something cast a shadow

Great score!   :tu:

If something like that was donated around here, one of the staff would have snuck it out the back door for sale on ebay.

You should see a binocular stereoscopic telescope (3D image). What's the mag on this field microscope? 20x would be perfect (10x for the occular and 2x for the objective). The purpose of this is to study specimens (leaves, insects, molluscs, minerals etc) in the field. In order to study live specimens it should have cool LED lightning, otherwise it would burn the unfortunate being. Is it a LED?

The ocular is 10X. The objective lens zooms from 50 to 300x. Yes, this scope uses LED lighting.

Then it is a biological microscope. With a zoom objective? Very interesting. The objective should be 5-30x and that gets multipied by the 10x occular. You can't get 3D at this range. I find it very interesting. Normal biological telescopes have 3-4 different objectives usually 4x, 10x, 40x and 100x. The first 3 work without oil immersion, so this covers a close to that range.
What did you throw on it? I suggest some water from a small lake.

30$ is really a steal.

I won't be using this one at work...you should see how my students handle microscopes.  :ahhh

I have a lot of prepared slides.

Chako, you didn't surprise me with the slides. We all know that you are the incarnation of "the man who has everything" abstract concept.

I didn't find that model in Boreal Microscopes. They only have regular ones. Their only zooms are stereo.

So, this is a discontinued model. Lucky twice.

PS: WAIT! I didn't find a pic, but I found the description. See the price?  :ahhh :ahhh :ahhh :ahhh :ahhh :ahhh :ahhh :ahhh :ahhh :ahhh
