For a minute there, I thought you were going to say the cure was to buy some more of them.

Ill second that!  After the last couple of challenges, in my new life as a grocery guy, I'm finding that an Opinel and a Classic or Executive covers my uses well.

That being said, it's fun to have options!

I like that blade contour a lot better than the stock angle.  Once upon a time I thought of grinding the point on one of mine in that way.  Other things had priority, and I never did it.  That looks like a very attractive mod.  Best wishes.  Gary

Got out in the sub-freezing to walk around some.  Nice clean mountain air.  Can't beat it.  Took along a No.08.  Can't even feel that you are carrying anything.  Best wishes.  G

Nice picture Gary!  A Colorama Blue No8?

Agree this cold is getting old, been hanging around since mid November 🥶

Now late morning a windy 16°, with sunshine tempting you to go out for vitamin D!!!

Staying in, got my dose of cold clearing drive yesterday!
If I start and end the day above ground, it is a good day!

I finally had to step foot outside last night to restock our woodpile by the back door and throw out some trash.  We didn't get any snow in our area but plenty of ice rained down.  Thawed a bit, then refroze into a nice sheet of ice.

I learned I am not a good ice skater.  No falls thank goodness but I'm sure my eyeballs were the size of frisbees when I slid a little.

It used to be fun when you were a sprout and fell down.  Wipe off your hands on your jeans.  Dust off your pants.  That changes after 50.
My pal Denny went out for some firewood and broke his leg on the ice several years ago.  He walked funny the rest of his life.  Then my buddy John did the exact same thing.  He got over it after a while.  Then like an idiot he fell off a ladder and that was that.  Wheelchair for good now.  Van with a lift.  For goodness sakes go get your wood gathered in before the bad weather and test your steps before you go outside.  Plan ahead and don't let Mama Cypher go outside either.
Best wishes,  G

I had a small pile by the back door but I should've made a bigger one.   Lesson learned.

Funny you mention cleats LC.  It's not until after I came back inside that I remembered I had bought some lawn aerators that tie on to your feet.  Bet I could've used those.

  that would be the scene, elevated cleats!

Reminds me of an ice storm in Michigan, I was maybe 10 or eleven.

Ice was very thick and smooth, the type that did not crack  when you walk on. Even in the yard.

My mom strapped on her ice skates and had a ball skating from the driveway (which was pea gravel) into front yard.  She loved to skate, and was very athletic.
After a good 45 minutes she came back into the breezeway. Took her skates off, and put her sneakers on. Then remembered she meant to grab the mail.   Walked/slide down the driveway.  Fell and hit her head hard, I went out to help her, blood everywhere.  Got her in the house, kitchen towel served as compress.
Neighbor drove her to hospital.    8 stitches.  And mail was still in the box.
She kept recalling that day, even into her 90s. “Should have put those skates back on!”

Maybe her only fail. My mom was pretty and perfect!

Another Opinel photo from my chilly walk yestiddy.  For some reason I like how the blue part peeks out from between the locking ring.  I'm not sure exactly why.  I have enough beeswax lip balm distributed in the area where the blade tang pivots to make opening easy.  My carbon No.8 was very sticky for a while after I got it but opens easily now.  Same with the blue one.  I might get the yellow one out later.  Best wishes.  G

I like the way the BLUE just pops!

It is -3° this morning, feels like -19° and to get colder by the week end. No walk today.

Stay safe my friend.

Art and I just got in.  It was -5 here at 6 am, now up to a tropical 25 degrees F 🦜🌴🍹🍍.  With the wind it's still below zero.  I have an air force high altitude parka that has spent the majority of its life hanging out because it's too warm for most winters.  It's definitely making up for lost time this year

neo6. OPIFLLEX. Part  2

[ Quoting of attachment images from other messages is not allowed ]

The blade’s tip is not pointed. Reminds me of a typical butter knife that is part of my table ware.

No understanding or explanation provided.

I can see a benefit, if shucking nuts like walnuts or almonds, you will be less likely to poke your skin and bleed.

It is duller than any Spley blades I have.   Not likely to cut contents of a package slicing the blades edge across the tape. 😉

Comparison to my No6 walnut blade with point. Length not sacrificed.

And, the handles are the same size.
The lanyard tube is only difference.

The size is right for my neck sheath that I have for my garden knife.  And, the thin leather lanyard does make it easy to extract.

I did not try the free sheath, it is listed to be compatible with. o6, o7, & o8 models.

It does not have a belt loop, instead a longer tie, likely to be looped around a belt or belt loop.

Regards

I've only just noticed that these non-locking Opies exist and I felt sure someone here would have some details.  Cheers for the guide LC.  :salute:

I mentioned in a previous post about checking on my Opies after a prolonged rainy spell.  The wood handled Opinels always stiffen up some and have since the beginning.  Hygroscopic tendencies for a natural material, right?
I read how the French workers would take a paper match and rub petroleum jelly into the sticky joints of their knives.  If a Frenchman isn't well acquainted with Opi problems, then who is?  I went with something similar.
My solution was to use a lip balm containing beeswax.  Worked like a charm.  When I was doing the Soldier challenge, I checked out my other SAKs and things to see nothing was succumbing to the moisture laden conditions.  Several SAKs had a little gritty feel on opening.  I brushed them with an old toothbrush and it freed up all of them.  The Opies were a little hard to open.
I assumed the woodies would be sticky.  They were.  Both beech handled and painted/dyed hornbeam felt about the same.  Usually the beech is first to get hard to open.  They both got the beeswax treatment and loosened right up.  Then I opened the No.09 DIY model.  Plastic never absorbs moisture, right.  The yellow plastic Opi was stiff.  The temps by themselves might have made a change, since the plastic can't soak up water.  I then ran a finger across the screwdriver bits that are held in the handle by friction.  Not to see how tight they were, just passed a finger across very lightly.  One bit fell out.  I pressed it back in more tightly than before and gave the joints of the blade the beeswax cure.  Instantly it felt just like always.  If you have one of these and it has been subjected to temperature change, you might want to inspect your bit slots for looseness.
Best wishes.  G

A very good PSA!

Never thought of lubing the pivot of the DIY.  And I do check the bit holder.  Usually require a bit or both to be pressed into place.

Even thought of just wrapping a piece of electrical tape around the handle and then replace as needed.

I thought of using a couple of short strips of black electrical tape to retain the bits as well.  There is a good possibility that the electrical tape could be just as useful by itself.  Similar idea to carrying duct tape for a MacGyver inspired precaution.  Best wishes.  G
