What happened to this tree?

Not sure if this is the right place to post but does anyone know what does this to a tree? Looks like the bark had just come of in a lot of small pieces, scattered on the ground. Thought it was a bit strange, and the only thing I can think of is that some kind of bug have had a feast and then the bark came off?

Near me in the woods there are two trees
With the same problem
When I had a closer look You could see
That it has woodworm and some sort of grub
That are under the bark of the tree  :tu:

Haven't seen anything like that before, atleast not a tree that was still standing. So got a bit curious if anyone had a interesting explanation, but it's usually quite simple I guess

I know there's some kind of beetle doing serious damage to coniferous  trees......Pine beetles maybe  :think:

Emerald Ash Borer does this type of damage to Ash trees in the US as there are no natural enemies for pest control as in Asia where they are from.
