Predecessor to the Leatherman Micra & Squirt?
on: February 11, 2007, 05:20:55 PM
I saw this on Ebay and thought it was interesting (not enough to buy it).  The description said "Cool Victorian Scissors dated 1898 and functioned as a cutter/pliers/nipper and I would consider this to be one of the first multi-tools. Marked "Germany" on the other side."

That's an interesting old pair of scissors all right. I'm looking at the pivot points, trying to figure out how the thing works. It looks like the handles pivot on a different point than the blades do?

There must be some sort of linkage hidden on the opposite side?

I think that I got it . The one handle has kind of a " U or Y " midway down the side of the handle that acts as a stop rather than being a pivot as you perceived it .

Yes, I believe you may be correct.

Here's another old ancestor of the Micra. It was made by the Peters Cutlery Mfg company in 1889.

There's a pen knife blade on one side, and a nail file on the other. Also a cigar cutter at the base of the handles.

Yet another prehistoric Micra. This one has mother-of-pearl scales, and the knife blade and nail file fold sideways out of the handles.
