To boldly go where no multitool has gone before
on: October 09, 2008, 07:31:12 PM
Guys, I don't know if there was a topic like this (if yes then sorry) but it would be nice to hear stories from multitool users and the "near-death experiences" of their tools.

My story:

I was driving my car in the middle of nowhere and suddenly the rear part of the exhaust pipe came off.
Of course, it was raining.
I took out my crapy chinese multitool, went under the car and tried to use the pliers as a crowbar to put the exhaust back in its place (because it would break off if I didn't put it back).
If it didn't broke then then it will never break.
As a memento, for a month, I wore a cut over the entire palm where the multitool had rough corners.

It is a crapy chinese piece of s*** but it was there when I needed it.
Hope the Surge will outperform it tenfolds.

haha awesome story man.  I hated multitools for a while because the only experience I ever had was with 5 dollar knockoffs.  But man, was I mistaken! My eyes have been opened, and my wallet emptied, and it has shown me that just like anything else in the world, you get what you pay for.  I'm glad your cheapo multi held up when you needed it, but I can promise you're surge wont let you down!  Its sure been good to me so far :salute:

Some cheaper multi tools have a purpose. I actualy use at work a Loews multi with the blue   rubber inserts as a loaner. It works surprisingly well and very inexpensive.

Someday and that day may never come, you will call upon your multitool to save your life. Would you trust your cheap multitool to save your life? Save you life and help the US economy buy Leatherman  :D
Multitools are the best thing that happened to mankind since the invention of the wheel!

Is that a fact or a subjective impression  :multi:

What do you think? Is it really stronger than the Surge? Surge is very massive.

Has anyone noticed that when something goes wrong and you're in the middle of nowhere it has to be dark or raining.

Damn you Murphy and your laws.

Nope i did a pull up ... on a core. WAY stronger than the surge.

I have read on leatherman site that the core has the strongest pliers.
But the surge has the biggest pliers.

So, wouldn't the surge be stronger?

The plier heads themselves are identical on the Core and Surge Marko.

What might be different is the way they are attached to, and the strength of, the handles.

I used to come here a lot.

Information on Both Models (based on my memory, so salt liberally and do your own research) -I'm not willing to make a verdict on which is stronger.

First, we need to measure the Plate thickness of Surge & Core - assuming all things equal, the rest of my theory might work.

The Surge pin goes through Tool-Handle-Plier-Handle-Tool.

The handles are right up against the pliers, which perhaps improves rigidity by giving no room for leverage? BUT the tools are loose and in no way improve strength.

The Core pin goes through Handle-Zytel-Plier-Zytel-Handle.

So with the Handles & plier further apart, there is maybe some more space for the pin to be affected by leverage, but maybe the Zytel inserts, which are jammed into the handle on either side and are fixed in place, add support to the pin and overall strengthen the beast?

Take it as you will.

You could also look at if the handles set at different angles to the plier, affecting the transfer of energy from your fist what is between the plier tips, which may alter "apparent" strength)
