EDC - Camper or Huntsman
on: April 27, 2017, 01:24:29 PM
Hi, I'd like to ask you for an advice ... or maybe I'd better say for your opinions :) on a dilemma I'm unable to solve myself.

I decided that my EDC knife would be solely a Victorinox in 91mm nylon. I absolutely want large blade, woodsaw, corkscrew and a can opener with phillips, less layers is generally better for me. So in the end I ended with the Camper or the Huntsman.

I usually carry my Vic in my right front pocket or on a lanyard on my neck.

What I can't decide on is if I want the more pocketable Camper (smaller, as the Huntsman is 20% / 3,5mm thicker, and lighter, as the Huntsman is 31% / 23g heavier) or the Huntsman with scissors, hook and a straight pin (I know the nylon scales lack the pin hole but the pin holds nicely under the hook.

I've got both these knives (among others lol), EDCed the Huntsman for say half a year and the Camper for about three months now and I still cannot decide what should be my primary EDC ... basically I can live without the scissors but I often wish they were with me ... so there's where you and your opinions come! :D

I know you can't decide for me but I like to hear about others' approach ...

EDIT: I carry only this one knife. ... To be precise: On person, I carry only this one Vic. When I have my EDC bag with me, I've got another Vic in there. But I don't always carry the bag so I don't speak about having scissors with me even when the Huntsman is in the bag ...

Swisschamp.....  :D

No,  but seriously, scissors are something that you'll really miss when you need them and you have your Camper  UNLESS..... you carry a Classic on your keys?

One vote for Huntsman.

With your restrictions, I would go for the Huntsman, unless the extra weight is really terrible.

'Nuff said.  :P

Personally, I would go for a modded bladeless Woodsman(4 layers like huntsman) plus a Rambler, but thats just me and my ideal EDC.
Hooked, like everyone else. ;)

All hail the hook!

Definitely the Huntsman then! If it's too much girth for your pocket, would you consider a dangler or a sheath? Both would help negate the bulk.  :tu:

I'd been carrying the knife(ves) in a sheath and I don't like it. I really like the MacGyver put-it-in-my-pocket-and-have-it-handy approach. :)

As for a dangler, do you mean a suspension clip? On a pocket I didn't try that.
On a belt I had a paracord loop and it is not bad but not my favourite thing though. Maybe I'll try to make one again ...

AND: Thank you for having me here! :)

Yes - suspension clip - Having used one on a modded Woodsman (Huntsman with mag and philips layer) it really helps the SAK hang in your pocket rather than loll around at the bottom. Some peeps here even pocket carry a Swisschamp, but they're a bit mad.  :D

I vote for Huntsman. Scissors are very useful, and it is not too much bulkier than camper.

Another vote for the Huntsman (extra points for choosing nylon scales :tu:).

91mm SAKs start at 4 layers for me because they don't flex much under torque. IMO, the Huntsman is the absolute no-nonsense SAK longterm, in that it has the most useful tools -read versatile, parcel hook included ::)- in a pretty compact and lightweight package.

Having said that, sometimes I wish Vic offered 91mm Rangers with nylon scales or made nylon scales readily available.

Vote for the Huntsman... You could always mod it to a Compact Huntsman if 4 layers seems bulky...

Picture this 3 layer mod:

-Combo tool/large blade with cork screw as back side tool
- Wood saw with awl as back side tool
- Scissors with mp hook as back side tool

Another vote for the Huntsman. Scissors are a must and the hook is a bonus.

I also suggest using a dangler, they really help with pocket carry. I make my own out of steel wire (although the prototypes were from coat hangers).

I'll dig one up and snap a pic.

Another for the Huntsperson. The extra sizeweight is neglectible, considering what you gain.

Here's my dangler setup. It will work on anything from a Compact to a Swisschamp and makes a huge difference (your mileage may vary).

It is attached to a Huntsman in the pic.

From the choices above, I'd go with the Huntsman too.

Thank you all for your answers. :)

BTW this is the dangler I'm trying, some cheap Chinese-made clip - quite high quality suprisingly. I'm considering sawing the bottom 1/3 off (I've got four of these clips so I can mess up a few) and drilling a hole in it to have the keyring through. But the way it is now it could be removed ... Right now I must say the thing hinders me a bit during usage. ...
2 Toolslinger: you inspired me to dig this up, thank you! :)

The second thing is a paracord "thingy" that can be adjusted to fit different depths of pockets ... OMG ... :)
PS: Don't you stare at my worked out body! Women pay to see that you know!!!!!! :D

I'm submitting my vote for the Hunstman on a dangler as well.   The set up on your pic is excellent way to carry SAKs that are 4 layers or larger.  The weight is on the belt and without it at the bottom of your pocket it makes a difference in comfort.

I had too look the Camper up.
As you mentioned it lacks the hook and scissors the Huntsman has.

Personally I think the choice is pretty simple, I'd go for the Huntsman.
I think it's sleek enough for EDC. But then again I'm used to EDC a Handyman.

I love the scissors and always have a SAK with me that has them. As mentioned before, you miss them if you need them, but don't have them.

I've made a keychain out of gutted paracord to keep the SAK in my pocket. That way I can't loose it, it's not in the way and not obnoxious (is that a SAK or are you just happy to see me?). As an added bonus it holds my Photo Freedom light.
