TSA updates sight specificly bans LM by name
on: May 01, 2017, 01:41:55 AM
As we know the TSA bans most knives scissors and sharp object. The exceptions to the rule is published and still are any tool under 7 inches, scissors with blunt blades less than 4 inches, ant they must not have any cutting blade can opener or awl of any sort. Items fitting thes rules can fly, suposedly.

Since I check these rules last week I just went back to their website and saw that they have updated to now specifically name Leatherman tools.
By naming LM they have singled out the brand inspite of thier selection of travel friendly products such as; Tread, StylePS, and OPT line. In its most abstract you could now say that even the Carabiner keyring with bottle opener and bit driver is now banned just because of the name stamped on it. These models all meet the established rules but may now be banned because they are LM products

As I said this was not up on the site a week ago.

I'm not planning on traveling anywhere for a few months. I was just checking the rules to see what I had that could fly away or if I wanted to go ahead and buy a Style PS.

At this rate I may just mail my sSurge to my destination.

And yes my keys do have the LM Carabiner Tool , Shard and one of those Ring bicycle tools with all the hex wrenches on it

I suspect they're using the name generically. Leatherman should sue them for that alone.

Not really, that is probably the result of lots of people searching their site or asking questions using the LM name. So, basically it is a customer service... If you wonder if you can bring your LM, you will find the answer to it easily.
It wouldn't be the internet without people complaining.

TSA Agent:  I'm sorry sir but you cannot bring that in your carry on.

Me:  This is a SWISSTOOL, see? Your website said no LEATHERMANS!

Slander, libel, something like that. Maybe just dilution of trademark. By choosing a very specific brand name, rather than say "pliers based multitools" or "leatherman-style tools", they are implying that the Leatherman brand is a "terrorist special". And paid for by the tax payer.

And Clown's argument.

Necessity is the mother of invention. If you're not ready, it's "a mother". If you are, it's "mom".

I flew with a full size SOG Traveler and Leatherman PS within the last week with no problems.

Just sent TSA a DM on Instagram. Wonder if they'll answer it...

My Style PS just flew to California. I did what was recommended and opened all the tools before sending it through the scanner and wasn't questioned about it at all :tu:

Only brought carry-on luggage so the Style was of immediate assistance
