The Poker Face Challenges were a great deal of fun. Here are the links if you want to reminisce or just browse.
Poker Face Challenge - February 2021
Poker Face Challenge - January 2023

So, why not have a go at it again and use dice this time?  :D
I am still trying to think this through so it makes sense. Nothing has been planned. If enough people are interested maybe we can have this in July? I am joining other challenges up until May.

Rules and stuff

-Instead of cards, this will be played with five dice, each of a different color that corresponds to a tool category.
-On Day 0, each player will be dealt a 5 dice hand. What your hand is and what colors it consists of will determine what you can carry.

Dice colors and tool categories:
Pink   - Fixed blade/axe/machete
Purple   - Folder/trad
Red   - SAK, SAK-alike
Green   - Dedicated tool (folding saw, ratchet, screwdriver, scissors, etc)
Orange   - Multi-tool

The dealer will also announce Color Strength.
Color Strength:

For example, these are both straights 1 to 5, but someone has to win. The Color Strength will determine who wins.
If the dealer had announced that the colors from weakest to strongest are green, pink, purple, orange, red, then the first hand wins.
Of course, if two players get dealt Five Sixes, there are only five sixes anyway, so that's gonna be a tie. The chances of this happening are about as good as me liking almonds.

-If your hand is:
Bust (high card; no pair, no straight - Only possible busts: 12456, 12356)

-One tool that corresponds to the color of your high die (always a 6).
-For example, an orange 6 means you start the challenge with a multi-tool.

One Pair

-Two tools that correspond to the two colors of the pair of dice.
-A Red 3 and a Green 3 means you start with a SAK and a dedicated tool.

Two Pair

-Four tools that correspond to the four colors of the two pairs of dice.
-For example, Purple and Red twos and Pink and Green fours would yield a folder, a SAK, a fixie, and a dedicated tool.

Three of a kind

-Three tools that correspond to the three colors of the three of a kind.
-Pink, purple, red fives? Fixie, folder, SAK.

Short Straight

-Four numbers in order (12346, 13456, 23455, etc)
-Three tools of any category.

Long Straight

-Five tools one of each category.

Full House

-Five tools of any category.

Four of a kind

-Four tools of any category.

Five of a kind

-Yahtzee! Six tools of any category.

-On Day 7, each player can attempt to improve their hand by requesting to exchange up to three dice.
The new hands (and new carries) start from Day 8 until Day 13.

-On Day 14 the best hand wins the Gummy Bear Round.
New hands will be dealt to all players. Round 2 begins on Day 15.

- On Day 21 each player can attempt to improve their hand by requesting to exchange up to three dice.
The new hands (and new carries) start from Day 22 until Day 30.

_________________________________
-Obviously with dice, some things have to change from the card-based Poker Face Challenges. There can be no Flush, since I only have five dice of different colors. The only "High Card" hands are the two possibilities missing the 3 and 4, because if the 1 or 6 is missing, then that is a Long Straight, if the 2 or 5 is missing, those are Short Straights and if there are two same numbers, then that is at least a pair.
-I'll go through this again and maybe even iacta a few alea myself to see if it works.
-If you see any obvious mistakes or things that do not work rules-wise or something, let me know.
-If we do go through with this I will be hosting it, but I may need a second dealer to deal my hand and maybe take over if I cannot for some reason. If anyone is interested PM me a 10 page resume signed by at least 6 references. Or just post here.

Timing has never worked out before for me to join one of the poker challenges, but I might be in depending on when it runs.

It might be worth reading through the Wikipedia article on poker dice if you haven’t already.

Also, it seems that sets of five eight-sided poker dice are readily available, which have both values and suits.

I took a look and based this off of that page and on the previous Poker Face Challenge. I have 5 dice of different colors already, and this challenge looks fine from what I can tell. So it may not be Dice Poker exactly, but it will be Poker Face Challenge with Dice.

This idea could be easily modified into a Yahtzee challenge. Doing so would add "small straight" and "large straight" and eliminate two possible busts. It could even be modified so that dice are rolled on days 0, 10, and 20 and the winner is whomever has the highest score per Yahtzee rules. There is quite a lot of potential with a dice-basdd challenge! :like:

Whether I'm in or not remains to be seen. My life is currently in sort of a state of flux.

I can add small straight, but for this to work as a Yahtzee Challenge, as I originally wanted, members would have to pick a score category, I'd have to cast the dice for one member, and then have the member pick what to keep, and cast again. More than double the work. I don't want this to seem even more complicated.
I am all for adding the small straight. I'm thinking Small Straight = Three tools of any category.
So:

Bust             -One tool of high card's color category.
One Pair          -Two tools of pair's color categories.
Two Pair          -Four tools of two pair's color categories.
Three of a kind   -Three tools of three color categories.
Small Straight   -Three of any category.
Large Straight   -Five tools, one of each category.
Full House           -Five of any category.
Four of a Kind   -Four of any category.
Five of a Kind   -Six of any category.

Ok, I think this looks good now. I expanded the tool categories to include more things.

To newer members who think this seems too complicated:
The previous Poker Face Challenges looked complicated as well, especially to people who didn't play poker. There is nothing to worry about. I will deal your hand, and tell you what your carry will be. When the time comes, we can request to draw new dice for a better hand, and maybe change what our carries will be. There will be help every step of the way. You don't have to know poker to participate. Check the previous Poker Face challenges for reference. They were excellent.

I feel like this one is less complicated. I awlso think you ironed out the hand progression issue from the earlier ones.

July may work for me. That would give me enough time to sort out my issues with photo editing. But then again, I may also be in the midst of a move. I'm interested bit not yet committed.

July would be tough for me, since I expect to be on the road a good chunk of that month.

Also, isn’t the Dean51 Trad Challenge in July, or did it get moved?
