A massive ransomware campaign appears to have infected a number of organisations around the world.
Computers in thousands of locations have apparently been locked by a program that demands $300 (£230) in Bitcoin.
There have been reports of infections in more than 70 countries, including the UK, US, China, Russia, Spain, Italy and Taiwan.

A beginners guide to the infection/worm
An article about the worm with links to updates INCLUDING Windows XP (for those who refused to update).

I've had a look and can't find information that anyone who has paid has got their data back. So find an online backup solution.

Find an offline backup solution, like a USB stick in your kitchen drawer. Pretty hard to break into something which isn't connected to... anything.

It seems to need a lot more than a backup...

It seems to need a lot more than a backup...
Not really, you get infected and all the data on your computer is encrypted. Wipe it and start again recovering your data from the backup. You may have to wait until a patch is issued by Microsoft or whoever. Bear in mind this is a worm not a virus so it doesn't get onto your machine through an infected file, it comes from your connection to the internet.

So the NHS is panicking over nothing?

Underfunded institutions like the NHS are never ready for events like this. So data will be lost. End of discussion about the NHS as that is far too political.
