Belgium Knife shopping
on: June 29, 2017, 07:21:37 PM
On a recent trip to Brussels I took the opportunity to look for knife shops.
The two shops I visited are right in the city centre and very easy to get to – it will be a shame not to.
They are both a 5 minute walk from the Grand Place, the main square in Brussels, in opposite directions. You can easily visit both. There is very little knifemaking in Belgium so the shops have knives from other countries.

Au Grand Rasoir, Rue de L’Hopital 7

http://www.coutellerie-jamart.be/

You basically go South from the Grand Place area, using a good map.

The shops is small, and has a huge selection of shaving and beard care products as well as kitchen knives and scissors.
It also has various victorinox and opinel models and a good selection of French made knives.  The prices were normal and not touristy – a good shop to visit.
The sales lady was very nice and helpful and also spoke good English (most people working in shops seem to speak no English), allowing me to have a look at the various traditional knives on sale. The shop was reasonably busy.

Another easy shop to get to. You go up from the Grand Place towards the Rogier Metro station and it is in an alley, opposite the C&A shop.
The shop is small but has a good selection of shaving gear and traditional and modern knives, European, Asian, American... They also have some limited edition handmade knives that can cost a few thousand euros. The sales lady was very nice and friendly, spoke good English and was happy to show me various knives and talk about them.

Very limited editions

I was really happy to see and hold this multiblade –multitool knife. These are very rare, but they can still be made on order, though the last order the shop had was 15 years ago. For me it was worth going to the shop, just to see and play with this. Mother of Pearl scales

Amazing knife shops! It would be my dream to own and operate a knife shop of that magnitude.

Unfortunately it's happening to all of us Photobucket users, it's a gradual thing and only the premium paying members will keep their accounts working and pics showing.

I was lucky enough to see the pics of that awesome white thousand-function tool. Great pics and thread!
Hopefully you can post them on Imgur or other website

The problem with photobucket is mine or yours? Should I register to be able to see the pics?

PS: I asked that before I saw that others addressed the problem already. Sorry, please ignore.

I haven't been to Europe in 15years. I would love to go back and do a knife collecting tour. Hit up the countryside looking for the local blade flavours. Do some hunting and fishing. Ahhh, I got dreams of a rich man but not the cash flow. Until then, I await your pics. 😉

Oooh. A Nontron.
I've wondered what they were like. We need a review on that one mate.

Expensive... :)  I would definitely recommend their opinel style models, with basic wood, but their fancier ones are over a hundred Euro...  I wrote a bit about the opinel style one in some thread a while back, though I do not remember which one it was... Maybe the wooden frame one.. but thanks to Kirky/Photobucket I do not know if it is still readable

Yeah, i know they're a bit minty. That's why I want you to review it, cos I can't afford one  :D it's specifically the multipurpose knife that caught my attention several years ago, but I never plucked up the courage to buy one (no scissors either  :P) The skittle shaped handles on the standard ones aren't really to my taste.

I would gladly own such a shop. The best one I've seen is in Barcelona. I've been 3-4 times there. Every time I stick my nose on the screens.

That's Ganiveteria Roca, at the Plaça del Pi! Not far from where I live, there's always groups of tourists, curious and people looking at those screens. The owner is a knife nut and very friendly, the attendants are mostly women though who don't care much for the Hobby.
Nice place ndeed, a bit epensive but they have lots of brands and foreign stuff   :tu:

If I go on a holiday, I always check if there are any knife shops in the area, and I always try to pick up something. I have been in the Barcelona one, one of my Laguioles came from there.
