How Long?
on: October 14, 2008, 10:38:04 PM
Some will see this thread for the thinly veiled excuse to play with a Camera that it is. so be it.

For the rest -

How long of a blade do you find sensible and practical?

(two pictures of varying quality)

Whoops! I took the wrong picture! I was meant to get one of the small blade on the Squatter.
Oh well, it's about the same length as the blade on the Classic, use your imagination.

So the three blades on the right plus the imaginary squatter blade cover about 45-65% of all my non-food related cutting chores.

These blades are around 35mm of sharp length (that's between 1 1/4" & 1 1/2" for you old fashioned chumps)

The next 3 Blades (in length, it should be the squatter short blade and the waiter long blade, but I'm not clever)
(the other two are a PST and Sheffield lockback) cover around 30% of my remaining non-food tasks, and 50-60% of my food related cutting.

These blades are around 2-2 1/2" of cutting edge (errr.. 52-63mm)

The final three blades I never use.

These have 3" or more blades.

For the remainder of food prep, and a few general cutting jobs, I do require longer or speSmurfpillsed blades - but for the most part, I'm covered.

Obviously many law folk came to the same conclusion, with their limit of 3" blades for general carry.

What is your experience with this? Do you ever really need a bigger blade? how long is your EDC knife?

(Keep in mind at all times I am more or less "Benner" sized, so I might just be avoiding large blades because they make me look proportionally ridiculous)

In a folder or similar I'd say 3inch/76mm as that's big enough to be useful, but small enough to be capable of precise work :)

Fixed blade's I'd say pretty much any size really, but over 12 inches is getting to be a bit of a handful :-\
Give in, buy several Farmer's!!!!!!

I guess I should be happy that I have a use.  ::) :D

My current EDC is 4" long and while it's nice at times to have the longer blade, 90% of the time it just isn't needed.

I think my actual ideal EDC blade would be just under 3" long.  This is not only a nicer user size, but also keeps me within the law.

Hey-

"It's not the size of the blade, it's the hardness of the steel..."

[cough]

P.S.  Am I to conclude that 1 (Imperial?) "Benner" equals 4 inches ??

For a folder 3" to 3.5". For a fixed blade 4" to 4.5". For machetes, 10" to 18".

I'm approximately a Benner-and-a-half in size yet I still prefer the smaller blades for most tasks. :)
