Chako, I think most people here on the forum falls into that huge grey area where you both use and collect to some extent.

A surefire sign of a collector is someone who gets (some) tools solely for having and not to use, but that is certainly not an exclusive definition. You can of course be a collector and also use the tools. Which I suspect is the category most here on the forum falls into.

To me collecting is a perfectly valid reason for acquiring more tools. I intended to have a (seemingly failed) slap at the thinking of collecting as a problem by making an analogy to various addictions. (And I really do wish I could find some shady dealers trying to spark an addiction by giving away the first few tools for free. Then again they would likely recognize an already hooked addict and charge extra instead...)

Another grey area: Where is the line between being a collector and a hoarder? Having lots of identical pieces? (Not saying it applies in any way, shape or form  )

For me it is simple.

1. A collector is someone who gets enjoyment from finding a new piece, and/or has a goal in mind due to an interest in said collection. A collector will usually take care of their collection

2. A hoarder may not enjoy finding new pieces...but cannot stop, or doesn't have any set goals in mind. A hoarder does not take care of their collection. They buy just for the sake of fulfilling a mental illness/compulsion.

There is nothing wrong with collecting things that interest you...that is until it becomes a compulsion, then that mental illness creeps in. Likewise, collecting within your budget and time constraints is ok. If the collection drives you into spending more than you can afford, then that is a bad thing indeed. Hoarders just gather stuff for the sake of owning, and most do not get any enjoyment from it either...they are driven.

I have been called a hoarder on this forum by a few folks in the past. I am most definitely not. I have goals and I do take care of my stuff. In fact, one of my goals was to gather tools so that I could photograph them and discuss them on this forum. Whatever makes you tick is a good thing provided there are no negative impacts.  :D

I've heard that when you have more than three of something then you are a collector.

So I collect pants.

Well, I'm a finger collector... so far!
